Petition calling for cannabis legalisation in UK to be debated in Parliament

Durham Police Force will not prosecute smokers and small-scale growers

Last week, Ron Hogg - Police and Crime commissioner responsible for that area - claimed that his aim is to deal with smokers and small-scale cannabis producers.

He stated: "We are not prioritising people who have a small number of cannabis plants for their own use. In low-level cases we say it is better to work with them and put them in a position where they can recover. In these cases the most likely way of dealing with them would be with a caution and by taking the plants away and disposing of them. It is unlikely that a case like that would be brought before a court."

According to him, only those with flagrant cases will be prosecuted, while others will be put on rehabilitation to avoid court.

Menawhile, Police minister Mike Penning said that any person growing cannabis will face jail sentences. Mr Hogg replied: "I would say the prohibition of drugs has failed and we need to look at that very carefully and that’s why myself and others are actually calling for this national debate to review the way in which we treat offenders and users and to come up with a third way. I tend to support decriminalisation. The reason for that is I want addicts to come forward for treatment without fear of any criminal repercussions. I’d be very happy to have a discussion with the Home Secretary on the matter and I would like to raise interest there to take the matter forward."

As we can imagine, Ron Hogg's policy has angered many detractors of cannabis legalisation in the UK, who are now facing an online petition to support this cause that will have to be debated in the Parliament.

Online petition for cannabis legalisation hits more than 150.000 signatures

Right after Ron Hogg's statement, an online petition to legalise marijuana in Britain was started, a petition that quickly reached the needed number of signatures for being submitted to Parliament debate.

On July 24th the petition had reached 49.000 signatures; on the 25th, the proposal already reached 100.000 signatures, what ensured that the Parliament will be required to debate it as it passed the threshold required to be considered an issue for debate. On Monday 27th, the e-petition had reached more than 150.000 signatures, being the second most signed petition on the Parliament committee-run website, what demonstrates the efforts and hopes of tens of thousands of people.

The petition is expected to be presented at a Petitions Committee meeting in September, although an official reply by the government is expected much sooner.

Entitled "Make the production, sale and use of cannabis legal" and written by James Richard Owen, the proposal is extremely clear in some aspects: "legalising cannabis could bring in £900m in taxes every year, save £400m on policing cannabis and create over 10,000 new jobs. A substance that is safer than alcohol, and has many uses" it adds, "it is believed to have been used by humans for over 4000 years, being made illegal in the UK in 1925."

We are facing a historic situation, in which Parliament will have to consider the legalistion of marijuana, allowing people to grow, sell and use cannabis freely.

Perhaps the only cloud on the horizon is a statement found in the petitions site, which claims that petitions reaching 100.000 signatures "are almost always debated". This proposal could fall apart if "the issue has already been debated recently or there’s a debate scheduled for the near future".

Let's hope this e-petition goes ahead and the voices of thousands of citizens are heard.
