Alchimia Grow Shop presents Batlle Organic Parma Yellow Onion Seeds, a new onion variety that can be cultivated either in pots or directly in open ground.

Organic Parma Yellow Onion, easy to cultivate and not very demanding

Parma Yellow onion (Allium cepa L.) is an herbaceous plant belonging to the Liliaceae family. It produces globular bulbs with white, yellow or greenish flesh covered with a paper-like coppery skin. It contains more sulphur than white onions, which provides it with a more complex and intense flavour.

The seeds are germinated between January and April in a seedbed sheltered from cold. Direct sowing can also be performed after the frost season in a 40cm x 10cm planting frame. The seeds are buried in loose, aerated, drained soil rich in compost, manure or worm humus.

2-3 seeds are placed in each small pot and watered abundantly ensuring a temperature between 12-18ºC. Seedlings sprout after about 12-15 days. In approximately 40-60 days, when the sprouts are as thick as a pencil and the weather is favourable, the plants are ready for transplanting into the vegetable patch or the final pot.

Organic Parma Yellow Onion: compact and delicious bulbs

During the vegetative growth period, this plant develops many long green leaves of about 50cm. As soon as the leaves cease growing, bulb formation begins underground. It is important that the soil is not clayey, and weeds are removed or soil is padded to prevent weeds from growing. Under these conditions the harvest quality is greatly improved.

Although this plant tolerates both sunny and shady sites, it should ideally be planted in full sun. Frequent, moderate and constant irrigation should be ensured, especially during bulb formation. Excessive watering can lead to fungal infestation, and conversely, if water is lacking, the onions may crack and spoil. To help in this task, the use of an automatic irrigation system is highly recommended.

Harvest can be initiated about 150 days after sowing by digging up the onions and cutting off the stalk and roots. They are then thoroughly washed and stored in a cool, dry place away from light. It is advisable to avoid irrigation before harvest in order to prevent humidity excess in the onions and thus obtain a better preservation.
