Cabbage or Brassica oleracea is a biennial plant native to the Mediterranean, the southern and western coast of Europe, of which a good number of varieties have been known and cultivated for centuries. Also known as kale or collard greens among other local variations, it has a wide range of shapes and colors, and some of them are truly spectacular.
In addition to helping in the fight against bad cholesterol and reducing heart problems, cabbage is rich in vitamins A, C and K, in addition to containing beta-carotenes, calcium, copper, manganese and potassium. It is high in dietary fibre, which facilitates digestion, as well as antioxidants such as carotenoids and flavonoids. And its energy intake is only 49kcal per 100g!
Although it can be harvested throughout the year, cabbage prefers warm temperatures for germination, which usually starts in spring. It's irrigation needs are high, as well as the nutritional requirements, especially nitrogen; however, overwatering should be avoided when irrigating. They usually take between 3 and 4 months after sowing to harvest, always preferring soils free from other plants.
