Purple Haze #23 - selected from pure Oldtimer's Haze
Selected from Oldtimer's Haze, a pure Haze line maintained for decades, the Purple Haze #23 mother of this hybrid strongly dominates the cross, contributing her tropical sativa personality in terms of growth structure, flowering times, psychoactive effects and, of course, her beautiful purple pigmentation.
The highly homogenous genetics of Oldtimer's Haze also confer great uniformity on this hybrid, reinforcing the pure Haze expression and reducing the influence of Afghan Indica from the NL5 component of A5 Haze so much as to be almost unnoticeable.
A5 Haze - a classic Dutch Haze hybrid from Nevil
The "male" side of this feminised cross is the almost mythical A5 Haze, a Dutch classic created and selected by Nevil Schoenmakers by crossing Northern Lights #5 with his Original Haze "A" male. This plant had a huge impact on the Dutch coffeeshop scene but since, sadly, the "A" male was lost relatively soon afterwards, it was never able to be reproduced in seed form.
The clone that Nevil selected was, however, carefully maintained and closely held among a small group of growers from southern Holland, eventually finding its way into the hands of a select few breeders, including Karma Genetics and ACE Seeds, so that growers will once again be able to appreciate the qualities of this heirloom Haze. In this hybrid, the A5 Haze contributes extra vigour and yield, alongside its distinctive aroma of Colombian Haze.
Purple Haze 23 A5 - for lovers of pure Haze expressions
The result of this near-pure Haze cross is a plant with a slender, flexible and well-branched structure with narrow leaves and medium to large internode distance. Its vigour and structure make Purple Haze 23 A5 perfect for SCROG cultivation or for the application of pruning and training techniques to increase yields. For the best results, use low to medium levels of fertiliser throughout the plants' lifecycle.
Growing Purple Haze 23 A5
For indoor cultivation, ACE Seeds recommends a flowering photoperiod of 11 hours light with 13 hours darkness, changing the plants to flower just 15 days after germination, thus avoiding them becoming too big for the grow space. Purple Haze 23 A5 can be grown outdoors and is suitable for subtropical and tropical climates but can also give good results in warm, coastal climates such as the Mediterranean or at latitudes up to 40ºN in areas with a mild autumn.
The flowering stage is lengthy, requiring 13-16 weeks, phenotype dependent. This long flowering period is compensated for by very good flower yields, with very few losses due to fungal pathogens, thanks to the high genetic resistance of this variety to botrytis-type mould attack and insect pests.
Purple Haze 23 A5 terpenes and effect
The terpene profile of Purple Haze 23 A5 gives aromas of floral berries, seasoned wood and spicy, metallic notes from the Oldtimer's Haze side, on a unique background of leather, liver, incense and hashish and rotten flowers inherited from the A5 Haze. The overall flavour is intense and savoury, similar to salted anchovies.
According to lab analysis, the principal terpene in this hybrid is beta-myrcene, alongside moderate amounts of trans ocimene. THC levels have been analysed at 13%, with 0.46% CBG and no detectable CBD. The effects are very cerebral and mind-clearing, sharpening and amplifying the senses, with a somewhat introspective and disassociating feeling, eventually relaxing into what is the calmest effect among all the various hybrids combining A5 Haze with tropical sativas, without being in any way heavy.
