Organic Contender bean seeds, a plant easy to cultivate
Contender beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) belong to the Fabaceae family. It is an herbaceous annual climbing plant. A variety with an early cycle, rustic and very productive. It has a compact size and grows up to 50-60cm, being resistant to the bean virus and oidium.
It is sown between spring and summer, in 4-6 seeds clusters at a 3cm depth. A distance of 30cm should be left between plants and 40cm between rows, providing sufficient space for development, maintaining adequate aeration and in loose soil with good drainage. Worm humus or manure can be added in poor soil, since these plants fix the environmental N.
It should be planted in a sunny area protected from the wind, at a temperature between 15 and 30°C maximum. They are not resistant to frost or sustained temperatures above 30ºC, presenting pod malformations. In very hot areas it can be sown in late summer, or planted as a complementary crop.

It is possible to sow in stages, separating groups by 20-30 days, so that we can enjoy a staggered harvest. The sowing can be done staggered, separating groups 20-3. The first shoots emerge after 7-10 days, forming groups of 3 plants that can develop perfectly together. When the plant is about 15-20cm long, we add soil covering the stem until the first low leaves, in order to strengthen its stability and development.
It needs abundant watering, but without waterlogging the substratum or letting it dry out. It is very practical to install an automatic irrigation system to facilitate this task, especially during the flowering and bean production stages which coincide when the weather is hotter.
At about 45 days after sowing the flowers begin to emerge, followed by the beans in oval pods of about 16cm. The production continues until autumn with the arrival of low temperatures, offering pods full of cream-coloured grains.
