Piñonet Piel De Sapo Papiro melon, vigorous and productive
Piñonet Piel de Sapo "Papiro" melon (Cucumis melo) belongs to the cucurbit family. It is an annual plant that offers optimal results in warm climates and suffers from frost. It can produce up to 4 melons under optimal conditions.
The perfect germination period is late winter-early spring in a seedbed. It must be protected from frost. Also in spring if it is sown directly in open ground or in the final pot. It is advisable to use a loose substrate with organic matter enriched with worm humus or manure.
The seeds are placed flat in 2-4 clusters on the ground (they can be soaked for 3-4 hours before sowing to activate them). Then, the seeds are covered with a thin substrate layer of about 0.5mm to facilitate sprouting. The ideal temperature should be around 16ºC (then 22-30ºC while growing) and direct sunlight.

Sprouts emerge after about 7 days from sowing, with a rapid growth until mid-spring. At this time the plant is transplanted into the final pot or vegetable garden, using a 1m planting frame between plants and 2m between rows. It certainly requires quite a space as it is a creeping plant.
Although it is not very demanding with watering, it needs regular and moderate irrigation, especially when the plant is young and in hot climates. It is very convenient to install an automatic irrigation system in our garden to facilitate the work, preventing waterlogging.
Melons can be harvested 3 months after sowing, when they show an intense green colour, start to crack, the stem dries slightly and the area in contact with the soil has an intense yellow colour. The melons can weigh up to 3-4kg, offering a white flesh with an intense and very sweet aroma.
