Rocalba Reina de Mayo lettuce, very easy to cultivate
Reina de Mayo lettuce (Lactuca Sativa) is an edible herbaceous plant typical of semi-temperate regions belonging to the daisy family. It produces large and tight leaves with a slight pinkish touch thanks to the anthocyanins. It has a soft texture and not very marked nerves.
It should be germinated in a seedbed (peat + worm humus) in winter or early spring (February-March), providing a 12-15ºC temperature and protection from frost. The seeds are scattered preventing them from getting too close together, then covered with 0.3-0.5mm of soil and then watered. After 4-6 days the seeds will start to sprout.
When the plant has grown 4-5 leaves, it can be transplanted into the final pot or in open ground in our vegetable garden. A distance of 25cm should be left in all directions between the plants, and grown in rows with a planting frame of 40x20cm.
Organic Reina de Mayo lettuce seeds, ready to harvest in 5 weeks
It requires sunlight with shade periods, a moderate nutrient supply and a good humidity level while controlling the soil from waterlogging and drying out. To facilitate the task, it could be helpful to install an automatic irrigation system, especially when living in regions with very hot summers.
It is a very simple plant to cultivate, ideal for novice growers who want to experience the pleasures of urban gardening. One can enjoy a good quantity of lettuce for several months by doing a staggered sowing. The lettuces are ready to collect in about 5 weeks after planting.
The lettuce bud is medium sized and compact. It produces smooth, rounded, soft and silky leaves with a very delicate and pleasant sweet flavour, ideal for salad fans.
