Swiss chard with white stalks is a vegetable belonging to the Quenopodiaceae family. It is native to the Mediterranean area and therefore it adapts easily to most of the different climates in Spain.
It is an organic variety with an early cycle. The plant has an upright growth and produces abundant large dark green leaves with soft and wide white stalks.
This plant requires a good sunlight exposure and a large amount of deep substrate. It needs high nitrogen and phosphorus dosages in order to provide large and fleshy leaves.
It can be sown directly in open ground or in a seedbed. Previously the seeds to be germinated are placed in water for 24 hours for good hydration, then the seeds are scattered in handfuls or 4-5 seeds are placed in each ground hole. When the plants reach 4-5 cm they should be cleared, leaving only one plant at a distance of 30cm between each other and 50cm between lines, as this plant requires plenty of room for growth.
It withstands the cold well, so it can be sown and harvested almost all year round. The seeding period can be spring, summer and autumn with the harvest in summer, autumn and winter. This Swiss chard requires a large amount of water, with plenty of watering preventing drought periods.
Several pests can attack the chard, such as aphids, flea beetles or agriotes spp among others. It can also become affected by cercospora, mildew and viruses.
