Rocalba sanguisorba, aromatic plant with a cucumber and walnut flavour
Sanguisorba (Poterium sanguisorba) is an herbaceous, rhizomatous, perennial and lively plant that belongs to the Rosaceae family. It is native to the Euro-Siberian regions and is characteristic of humid mountain pastures. It is an aromatic and edible plant with a walnut and cucumber aroma which is perfect for salads, vegetables, soups, sauces or to aromatise vinegar.
This plant develops in the form of small shrubs about 50cm high, with thin and upright stems. It has opposite leaves and most grow from the stems base. They produce pinnate and elongated leaves with clusters of leaflets with serrated edges. The flowers are arranged in dense bunches at the top of the stems and acquire pinkish tones.
From February to June, seeds are germinated directly in open ground (at a 50cm distance between plants) or in the final pot since the roots are fragile and transplants can damage them. A few seeds are scattered on a mixture of soil and worm humus or compost, pressing gently without burying them but setting them down well.
Rocalba sanguisorba, highly resistant to drought and very easy to cultivate
This plant requires indirect light for its germination and a temperature between 15-25ºC. Also a substrate with enough humidity for seeds to sprout in about 3-4 weeks. It is a very easy plant to cultivate, withstanding temperatures down to -6ºC, and adapting well to saline or poor substrates.
Even so, it develops better in loose soil, with nutrients and good drainage to prevent waterlogging. It requires moderate irrigation from time to time, because although it is ultra-resistant to drought, its development will be more vigorous. Excess moisture can cause powdery mildew in which case this infestation can be treated with organic fungicide products.
The leaves are harvested during spring and summer, using the tender’s leaves in salads, sauces, soups, stews and to flavour oils and vinegars. The roots are perfect for infusions that can help soothe throat irritation. It also has properties to accelerate wound healing by topical use.
