Alchimia Grow Shop presents Rocalba Fennel Seeds, an aromatic plant that develops beautifully both in our vegetable garden and in medium-large pots.
Rocalba Fennel, easy to cultivate in warm climates
Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is the only species in the genus Foeniculum, belonging to the family Apiaceae. Although it is native to southern Europe (especially the Mediterranean coastal areas), it can be found in temperate zones throughout the world.
It is an extremely aromatic perennial plant. It grows quite vertically, and can reach up to 2m in height, although it usually does not exceed 50cm. The leaves are long and fine, ending in a needle shape, with straight, firm stems, widening at the base to form a white bulb.
The seeds should be germinated in late winter after the frost season. The seeds can be sown directly on the ground (cultivation frame 50cm x 20cm) or in a seedbed, using a loose substrate, rich in worm humus and with good drainage. It should be ensured that it receives plenty of sunlight.
Rocalba Fennel, with an intense aniseed aroma and flavour
Fennel grows to its full potential in warm climates with mild summers. It must be protected from frost as it does not tolerate it well. It is advisable to tutor the branches in case the plant grows considerably in order to facilitate its development.
As for watering, it needs moderate but frequent irrigation, preventing it from becoming waterlogged but also preventing it from drying out as it could damage the roots or bulb. As for pests, it is advisable to use organic phytosanitary products to prevent caterpillars and aphids from acting in our area.
After about two and a half months since sprouting, the stems and leaves can be harvested for use in cooking or infusions. They should be cut from the base with clean scissors. In case one is interested in collecting the bulb, we should wait until autumn, cutting the plant just above the roots so that it grows back.
