Tropf Blumat; automatic watering without electricity or batteries
Graden with intellgence and conserve water by using Tropf-Blumat, a simple and flexible automatic irrigation system that is suitable for outdoor gardens, terraces, greenhouses, house plants and indoor grow tents. You can set the system up to keep your plants watered while you're away on holiday or use it all-year-round to save time and effort.
The heart of the Tropf-Blumat system is the innovative ceramic cone "carrot" sensor valve. These sensors are soaked in water before being buried in the soil where they can react to moisture levels within the substrate. As the soil dries, the ceramic cone also dries, which creates a negative hydrostatic pressure in the sensor which, in turn, opens a membrane valve, allowing water to flow slowly through the dripper hose to irrigate the plants.

This system means that each plant in your garden can have its own sensor and thus receive the exact amount of water required, delivered at a perfect temperature to encourage natural, healthy growth. Compare this to other drip irrigation systems which deliver a set amount of water at predetermined intervals and you'll quickly see how Tropf-Blumat can work to ensure plants are optimally irrigated at all times, without wasting a single drop of water.
Installing the Tropf-Blumat system:
- Prepare the Blumat sensors. Remove the heads completely from each sensor and immerse the ceramic parts in clean water until they are filled. Screw the head back on the sensors while they are under water to ensure the absence of air bubbles and leave to soak for a further 15 minutes.
- Place the sensors. Water the soil generously and place the sensors in the ground near to the roots, pushing them down to the indicated depth. The drip tube should extend around 8cm from the sensor and there should be a gap of 20-25cm between each sensor
- Connect the sensors to the feeding tube. Cut the feeding tube into suitable lengths and connect to the sensors using a "T" piece. At the end of the feed line, connect the last sensor with an end-piece. Do not use lubricants to connect the pieces. Close the valve on all the sensors before adjusting the settings. Connect the feed line to a water source. This can be a mains water supply or a deposit tank.
- Adjust the sensors. Turn on the tap and check there are no drips anywhere in the system. Starting with the last sensor in line, open the adjustment screw by turning counterclockwise until water runs from the dripper tube. Now, slowly close the adjustment screw until it stops dripping. Then, turn the adjustment screw 17$ turn clockwise (2 arrows). Repeat this adjustment with all the remaining sensors. Your automatic irrigation system is now ready to use!
