Sensi Seeds is one of the oldest and most influential seed banks in the world and an essential reference in the history of modern cannabis. Founded in Amsterdam in 1985 by Ben Dronkers, it has preserved for four decades some of the genetics that shaped current cultivation, such as Skunk #1, Northern Lights, Hindu Kush or Jack Herer. The history of Sensi Seeds begins with Ben Dronkers, born in Rotterdam in 1949. In the early seventies he ran a clothing store and frequently traveled to Turkey, Afghanistan and Pakistan to buy fabrics, where he discovered the uses of hemp. Between the late seventies and mid-eighties he traveled the so-called hippie trail through India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Morocco, collecting seeds from local varieties. After several arrests for cultivation, he verified with the help of a lawyer that cannabis seeds were not included in the prohibition, and decided to dedicate himself to them.

In 1985 the Sensi Seed Club was born, considered the founding year of the bank, and that same year he opened the Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum in Amsterdam. During the eighties, Dronkers was one of the few Dutch growers with access to genetics such as Skunk #1, Original Haze or Northern Lights, brought from the United States. In 1991 he acquired The Seed Bank, Nevil Schoenmakers' bank, and merged both collections into the Sensi Seed Bank, which became the largest cannabis seed bank in the world.
Since then, Sensi Seeds has remained a family business. His children have played a key role: Alan Dronkers drove the breeding programs of the early nineties, Gio Dronkers joined in 2004 and today leads the company, and Ravi Spaarenberg is in charge of research and development. In 2023 the brand reached the United States market and in 2025 it celebrated its 40 years of history.
During his first years as a grower, nobody wanted to buy Ben Dronkers' flowers. Dutch consumers were accustomed to hashish and imported, pressed and brown-colored weed, so those green and fresh buds seemed strange to them. According to Dronkers himself, they even called them "spinach". Today those same genetics form part of the foundation of modern cultivation worldwide.
Sensi Seeds' catalog brings together hundreds of varieties and combines the preservation of historical genetics with new breeding projects. Many of its varieties are available in several formats, so that the same genetic can be found as regular, feminized or autoflowering. It is the heart of the bank and where the varieties that marked an era are found. Here are foundational genetics such as Skunk #1, Northern Lights, Hindu Kush, Afghani #1, Super Skunk, Hash Plant or Northern Lights #5 x Haze. Later classics such as Big Bud, Black Domina, Silver Haze, Mr. Nice or Shiva Shanti were added, the latter named in honor of two family members. It deserves a separate mention. Jack Herer was presented at the 1994 Cannabis Cup, where it took first prize, and was named after the American activist author of The Emperor Wears No Clothes, one of the most influential books in favor of hemp and legalization. Over time it has become one of the most well-known varieties in the world. Furthermore, it was the genetic chosen by Bedrocan, the Dutch producer of standardized medicinal cannabis, to develop products that are dispensed in pharmacies in the Netherlands.
To adapt to the needs of today's grower, Sensi Seeds offers feminized and autoflowering versions of many of its classics. Feminized eliminate the need to identify and remove males, while autoflowering flower according to their age and not according to light hours. And in 2012 it opened the Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum in Barcelona, in the Palau Mornau, a 16th century palace, as a sister site to the Amsterdam museum.
