Sensi True Blood is a feminized variety from Sensi Seeds created together with Hawaiian breeder Sticky Finger Seeds to launch the Sensi Seeds Bloodline, presented in October 2026. It's a 60% indica and 40% sativa hybrid that combines the veteran Maple Leaf Indica with the exotic Maui True Blood.

Its aroma starts with a tropical sweetness with an undertone of earthy hashish and maple syrup, while the effect evolves from an active and clear-headed high to a deep body relaxation. Added to all this is a very unusual trait in cannabis: approximately half the plants release an intense red-colored sap when cut.

History of Sensi True Blood: the legend of the bleeding plant

Behind this variety is Will Grinnell, founder of Sticky Finger Seeds, who has been growing cannabis since 1973 and settled in Maui in 2010. For decades he had heard Hawaii veterans talk about Hawaiian Blood, plants capable of exuding red sap that for many were nothing more than a myth.

When Will arrived in Maui, powdery mildew and root aphids devastated his entire crop. His friend Papaya John, an old-school local grower, then gave him a plant that thrived in that contaminated garden. Will named it Hawaiian Dream because, as he tells it, it gave him hope back; it was a relic that a Hawaiian family had preserved for more than 50 years.

Maui True Blood was born by accident. Will and some friends were taking turns watering a garden whose owner was traveling and they didn't notice a Royal Blood male that ended up pollinating several Hawaiian Dream females. Until then, his crosses only produced a pale pink sap, but that offspring finally showed the intense red that defines the line today.

The collaboration with Sensi Seeds arose when Tim Hoebee, a member of the seed bank's team, traveled to Maui on his honeymoon. Will and his wife showed their favorite beaches to the newlyweds, and that friendship ended up becoming a joint project between Hawaii and Amsterdam.

To create Sensi True Blood, Will started with just over 30 Maple Leaf Indica seedlings and chose those that best adapted to Maui's demanding climate. The work was divided between the Hawaiian garden and Sensi Seeds' R&D facilities, with two flowering test crops in Hawaii and parallel tests in Europe.

Genetics of Sensi True Blood

Sensi True Blood comes from the cross Maple Leaf Indica x Maui True Blood, with a ratio of 60% indica and 40% sativa. It's a robust and fast-growing plant, of medium size, with relatively long internodes and strong lateral branches.

Its most characteristic trait is the tendency to develop a dominant main cola that, without training, can occupy the top meter of the plant. The buds are large and conical, with a marked tip, medium or large calyxes, and long pistils that gain color as they mature. According to the breeder, the line usually shows pinkish tones rather than purple.

Maple Leaf Indica

Maple Leaf Indica is a pure indica from Sensi Seeds derived from old Afghan material, linked to the Mazar-i-Sharif hashish tradition. It has been backcrossed to fix the purity of its ancestors and stands out for its high resin production and a sweet perfume reminiscent of hashish.

It's one of the favorite varieties of Gio Dronkers, director of Sensi Seeds, and that's why the bank proposed it for this project as a representative of its legacy of more than 40 years. Its footprint appears in numerous hybrids from other banks, appreciated for their sweet and caramelized notes.

Maui True Blood

Maui True Blood is the flagship variety of Sticky Finger Seeds, sativa-dominant and developed in Maui's tropical climate. In its family tree appear Royal Blood from House of Orange, the Hawaiian relic Hawaiian Dream, and an old Durban cut known as Family Secret; the bank also mentions Kipahulu Cut, Blue Dream, and Granddaddy Purps among its ancestors.

Will Grinnell observed that the Maui True Blood mother plant resisted powdery mildew when others fell, something not minor in Hawaii's humid environment. The color of its sap is attributed to a high concentration of anthocyanins, the same pigments that tint some buds purple.

Growing Sensi True Blood

Indoors, Sensi True Blood completes flowering in 55-65 days and reaches between 70 and 110 cm in height. Its production can reach 460-650 g/m², a figure the bank places in the XXL yield category.

To take advantage of its full potential, it's advisable to do topping or some type of training, since without it the plant concentrates almost all flowering in a single elongated cola. It responds well to mainlining and lollipopping, and its long internodes make it a great candidate for ScrOG; on the other hand, it's not the best option for SOG.

Outdoors it can grow between 1 and 2 meters and produce 550-750 g per plant in ideal conditions. It adapts to almost any climate, but performs especially well in cool and humid areas, which makes it interesting for many French growers.

Its difficulty is medium: it's a vigorous and resistant plant, although to reach its maximum yield it requires a bit more attention. Around 50% of the plants show red sap when cut, especially during the vegetative stage; in flowering the trait usually disappears, although some cured buds may release a reddish resin when ground.

Flavor and effect of Sensi True Blood

During maturation, the crop gives off an aroma of tropical sweetness supported by notes of earthy hashish and maple syrup. After drying and curing, the profile rounds out: the sweetness gains a syrupy nuance, the hashish becomes spicier, and the earthy background becomes more present.

On the palate it opens with an intense strawberry sweetness, with echoes of forest fruits, followed by a marked pine flavor. The finish recalls old-school hashish and leaves an aftertaste that remains long after each puff.

The effect develops in two phases. It starts with an energetic and mentally clear high, active and functional, and over time physical relaxation gains ground until it ends in a deep and lasting body effect, something to keep in mind when choosing the time of day.
