Terpenes are aromatic molecules responsible for the scent of plants. Lavender, mint, eucalyptus, cannabis and many more contain different amounts of different terpenes, which determine their scent.
Either to repel predators or to attract pollinating insects, plants have developed these aromatic molecules for several reasons.
The scent of cannabis depends on the combination of terpenes contained in each plant. Sometimes it can be lemony (high amounts of limonene) while others is floral (linalool). Terpenes also play their role on the effect of cannabis, modulating the effect of cannabinoids. Thus, linalool is known for its relaxing properties, while limonen is ideal to improve mood.
