Today I'll tell you how this vaporiser works: the Firefly 2.
This vaporiser is available in several colours, red, blue, white, black and gold.
The first Firefly model stood out for its aesthetics, but this is much smaller, weighs half as much and it's a third lighter. This is the old one, the Firefly 1 and this is the 2. Really beautiful!
Let's see what the Firefly2 box contains. We remove the cover and open it very easily, and the first thing we see is the vaporiser, in this case in black. This cardboard, which has the instructions in English: how to vaporise herbs, and how to vaporise concentrates, and then different boxes that we’ll see.
This is the vaporiser, this box that says Charging Dock holds the charger base. This base is connected with a USB cable that’s also in this box, the typical Micro USB or USB cable, like that of Android type phones. This cable connects here, in the base, and the other end to any USB power adapter or computer, or wherever you want, and we just leave the vaporiser in the base to charge it.
What else is in the box? Important: it’s one of the few vaporisers that has a spare battery, it’s really handy. This battery will last approximately 5 or 6 sessions on average, and if we have another battery charged while we’re out and about, it’s perfect.
And we have a small cleaning kit, in fact this device is very easy to clean. Simply carry a brush, 2 plastic sticks, and some isopropyl alcohol wipes. With this, we clean easily the vaporiser. And finally, there’s the Concentrate Pads, simply 3 grids to allow us to consume oils or extractions.
How does it work? I’ll show you, we’ll load it with grass and test its vaporisation. We take a little "Juanita" in this case, and we're going to grind it up. It doesn’t need much grass, the bowl is not very large, but enough to give 5 or 6 good tokes in each load.
We’ll grind… and we’ll be loading the vaporiser with the same hand, there’s no problem, with the grass that we just ground up. We take it and place it in the bowl, there is no need to press down much, the air must circulate well through the vaporiser so we load more or less level with the body of the vaporiser. Now simply, in this position we close the magnetic lid.
To use it? Very simple, you can see that it has a button here and another on this side. Now it’s configured so that when the 2 are pressed at the same time, on each side, the vaporiser starts. You can see that it’s very fast, I press both at the same time, the LED starts to flash green and when it stays on we can vaporise. There it is, on, let’s go for it, a long puff to see how it is… Wow, it's delicious!
After vaporising, it’s time to clean it. We take the "Cleaning kit", in this box, take one of these isopropyl alcohol wipes and the brush. To clean it, just remove the lid, empty out the vaped herb and clean the bowl well with the brush.
And once it’s emptied, wetake an isopropyl alcohol wipe that will help us remove the bits of grass that are always left behind and that are sometimes quite sticky… okay? We go over all the nooks and crannies with the alcohol wipe, even the lid, to leave the glass clean and shiny. Now it’s pristine!
This vaporiser allows us to adjust a few things, among which is, logically the temperature and some other operations, but to do this we need to download an app to our mobile or tablet, the Firefly app. Here we’re using a tablet, we’ve downloaded the app from the App Store, but it’s also on Google Play for Android.
We started the application and the first thing it asks us is to connect. We connect, it works through Bluetooth by the way. It’s connecting to the unit, it’ll detect it so we can start to configure. It is asking us to update, in fact it hasn’t asked us, it’s already directly updating the firm ware which is the operating software of the unit. In this latest firmware basically it’s gone from 5 or 6 pre-selected temperature modes to now having a global, sliding temperature mode as we’ll see in the application.
The first thing we see on the screen is the temperature display. As you can see it is very simple, simply sliding up and down we can adjust the temperature. As soon as it receives it, I don’t know if you can see, but the LED on the vaporiser flashes, I’ll show you. If we touch on the left we enter the application configurations, Device Connection connects and disconnects the vaporiser. Device Info shows the default name of the vaporiser, which we can also change. If we go to the battery level, it shows us graphically the state of battery, in this case it’s halfway down. Calibration is a new feature in this version that simply gives a little more vaping power or flavour, or gives slightly smoother vapor by sliding left or right. And this is the important part, how to switch the unit on. How do we want it to work? By pressing both buttons at the same time? Only the one on the left, or the one on the right, or either of them? We’ll leave it on either button.
And some more stuff, the central temperature display and on the left, the menuthat we’d have on the Firefly website, the store, the instructions, video tutorials, etc etc…
We’ve already seen how the herb vaporiser works and now we’ve seen how the application works. Now let's see how to vaporise with resins. Let’s go…
First we take the “Concentrate Pads" which is the box with the screens, in this case 3 of them. We take one, and you will see that it is very simple.
Simply open the vaporiser, put the screen in its place, with your finger or if you want with the tool, until it is firmly set in the bowl. And now we simply take our oil, our resin, with the dabber, and place it on the grid… Ok, once it’s on, close the lid and we can start.
The first thing we have to take into account is that the temperature for vaporising of resins must be much higher than for flowers. We’re going to raise the temperature to vaporise concentrates to the maximum, to 255ºC, and there we see that the Led flashes 3 times. It’s ready to go.
What we have to do now is to prepare the screen so that the resin is in the whole grid. How do we do this? Easy, we’re going to take short puffs, a total of 10 (like a cigarette) so that the resin is spread over the screen, and then we can take a long toke to fully vaporise.
Earlier we set the application to work with either button, so we press here and when the LED stays on we can start the 10 short puffs, and then the long one. We press, flashing green, till it stays on, perfect. Now for the 10 small tokes… and now we can take the long puff, let's go… Spectacular!
