In the context of marijuana cultivation, activated carbon is primarily used to eliminate odours in indoor grows. However, some growers also use activated carbon filters for:
Activated carbon filters coupled to air extractors are excellent tools to eliminate the intense odor of cannabis plants, although there are several other uses that you can give them. Today we present some of them that, as you will see, will make your life easier and less...fragrant.
Activated carbon filters are typically cylindrical in shape and contain activated carbon, a microporous material with exceptional odour absorption capabilities. As the extractor pulls air from the grow space, it passes through the filter before being expelled outside. The activated carbon traps all odorous particles, effectively neutralising the smell.
The casing of the filter can be made of metal or plastic, with the latter being lighter and often preferred for use in grow tents. An outer jacket is typically added to trap fine dust particles and protect the filter.
When selecting a carbon filter, consider factors such as the extractor's capacity and the size of its outlet. The filter should always have a flow rate slightly higher than that of the extractor. This ensures negative pressure inside the tent or grow room, guaranteeing that all the air exiting the space has passed through the filter.
The installation of an activated carbon filter is straightforward. It can be placed either inside or outside the grow room or tent. The filter's lifespan varies depending on the manufacturer and model, but it is generally recommended to replace it every 2–3 growing cycles. Some models can be disassembled, allowing the carbon to be reloaded without the need to purchase a new filter.
Carbon filters remain a reliable and widely used solution for indoor cultivation. When properly installed, they can eliminate up to 99% of odours.
To further enhance the performance of carbon filters, various complementary products are available, such as ozonators. These filters are often combined with specific air fresheners like: The Neutralizer, Zerum Gel and Zerum Block, and other Ona brand products such as Ona Mist, Ona Block or Ona Gel.
