How to make Hash with ice. Tutorial video

In this new Alchimia Video tutorial, we show you in great detail how to properly carry out a hash extraction with ice and water. With this type of cannabis resin extraction we can obtain a very high quality end result.

In tis process we have used a washing machine for hash extraction along with six filter bags with different micron sizes, in which we collect the trichomes or resin glands we’ve extracted from the Philosopher Seeds variety Early Gorilla.

Today we’ll see how to carry out a high quality hash extraction using ice & water.

To carry out the extraction we’ll use this 22L washing machine, this insulating cover for it, the wash bag which will hold the starting material and the set of different micron size bags to do the filtering. And of course: ice, water and the buds that we’ll put in here.

We’ve got 3 bags of about 800 grams of weed that we fresh-froze as it was cut. We’ve removed the stems and here we can see how we’ve left the buds of this Early Gorilla of Philosopher Seeds, from which we are going to carry out the extraction.

I’m being accompanied in "voice over" by Dani, who is our extractions expert who’ll help us with the whole process. Dani, what is the first thing we need to do?

Dani- The first thing we’ll do is to place the buds into the cylindrical bag…

Which is this one, very good.

Dani- …and once that’s done, we’ll go on to fill the washing machine with ice.

Okay. We’re opening the bags of Early Gorilla, fresh-frozen, remember aswe said before, just after cutting it. Should I fill right up?

Dani- Yes, yes. It’s really important to always keep everything cold throughout the whole process.

And now for the next step, which is…

Dani- Now we’ll fill it with ice.

First the biggest chunks, right?

Dani- Exactly

In it goes. Let’s get another bag out, until you say stop…

Dani- That’s enough, now we can add the crushed ice…

Yes? The crushed ice…

Dani- Perfect

All of it. And now the snow ice.

Dani- Exactly.

Jon Snow hahahaha

Dani- Perfect, now we can put the bag with the buds in…

Like so?

Dani- Exactly. And now cover it with a bit of ice.

The reverse process, right?

Dani- Yeah

First the crushed ice, sorry, I mean the snow, then the crushed ice, which is this, and then I finish off covering it with…?

Dani- Yes, you can put a few more of the big ones. Perfect.

Is that okay?

Dani- Now we can close the washing machine, wrap it with the cover and we’ll wait a good while for it to cool.

The isothermal cover. We will fit it so it keeps everything cold during the process. Perfect, and now how long do we wait?

Dani- 10 minutes, 15 to be sure.

Perfect. Well, let’s wait…

The time has passed, we’ve brought some cold water. What do we do now, Dani?

Dani- Because the water is already cold, we can pour it directly to cover the ice with water. We’ll keep adding it until…

I’ll just pour it…

Dani- Exactly

The water is going in, filling up…

Dani- And once we’ve covered the ice with a couple of cm of water, we can stop pouring.

I’ll keep adding it until we’ve got a finger’s depth over the ice.

Dani- Perfect, now we can begin the first wash.

Let’s close the lid. ¿How long shall we put it on for?

Dani- We’ll run it for between 5 and 10 minutes. Because we want to get really good quality results, it’s a relatively short time, but it will allow us to get the purest possible end product.

I’ll set it to 6 minutes.

Dani- Perfect

Keep in mind that we should put our machine on the “gentle” setting, which stops and starts periodically, rather than spinning constantly. Like now, it does a wash cycle… and it stops again. And we can see the color of the water, Dani, it’s a nice golden color.

Dani- The color of the water is very important, while it’s golden there’s no problem. That is, in fact, the color of the resin glands which are suspended in the water. Once we see the water turn green, then it’s time to stop washing and begin filtering.

It looks like the timer has finished. We can see that it has a gold color, you can more or less appreciate it here, and before we start filtering let’s see how many bags and what type, Dani?

Dani- We’ll use 6 bags: 220, 180, 150, 120, 70 y 40 microns.

Perfect, well let’s set them up properly. If you help me we can start to drain. Look what a lovely color! We’ll be here a while, eh. What do we do now, Dani?

Dani- Now we can remove the first bags, which basically serve to filter small pieces of vegetable matter and other impurities. We can see that right now it’s coming out very clean, which is always a good sign…

We’ve removed the 220, now for the 150…

Dani- Exactly, and with the next one, we’ll give it a good rinse with very cold water to finish off cleaning the resin, and filtering the glands that perhaps should have passed to the next mesh, and also clean it of chlorophyll if there is any residue. We can see that there’s practically no impurities…

It’s really clean, eh!

Dani- We can clearly see now, by the micron bag we’re working with, that this is a variety (Early Gorilla) with glands between 90 and 70 microns.

Well that’s it, we remove the 120 which we’ve cleaned…

Dani- And now we’ve got the 70 micron bag, which is where we’ll find the majority of the resin glands.

I’ve changed my gloves because they were dirty and wet, and I’ve stretched the mesh over a plate or a bowl to keep it as flat as possible. In this way, with a clean spoon we can collect the extracted resin, and place it on some baking parchment.

Baking parchment is ideal so the resin heads don’t stick to it, as we’ve seen with other processes. So we collect up all the resin until there’s none left, because this is pure gold, and with a small clean spoon we can finish off collecting and leave the mesh as clean as possible.

Once it’s on the parchment, we’re going to compact the resin to make a type of sausage or in other words, just as if we were rolling a huge joint, because this way it will be much easier to work with later on. We keep on compacting and rolling inside the parchment until the hash ends up lightly pressed together. You see? So now we can close the paper and put it into the freezer.

Now that 24 hours have passed, we’ve removed the “sausage” from the freezer and using a micro-plane grater we start to grate it over the parchment paper. We work the resin and spread it across the parchment so that it dries evenly. Next, we take the trays that you see here with the grated hash, place them in the refrigerator, and we’ll leave it for 4 or 5 days and then we will show you how everything will have dried.

We’ve put some of our hash, our resin, in a jar, now just look at that lovely fine texture and white/gold color. Of course, always store it in the fridge to avoid oxidation.
