A5 Haze - a formidable Haze hybrid from Nevil
The mother of this cross is the sought-after A5 Haze, a Dutch classic created and selected by Nevil Schoenmakers by crossing Northern Lights #5 with his Original Haze "A" male. This plant had a huge impact on the Dutch coffeeshop scene but since, unfortunately, the "A" male was lost relatively soon afterwards, it was never reproduced in seed form.
However, the clone that Nevil selected was carefully maintained and closely held among a small group of growers from southern Holland, eventually finding its way into the hands of a select few breeders, including Karma Genetics and ACE Seeds, allowing growers across the world the chance to appreciate the qualities of this mythical Haze. In this hybrid, the A5 Haze contributes extra vigour and yield, as well as its distinctive Colombian Haze aromas.
Thai landrace from Chiang Mai
The male side of this hybrid is an excellent example of Thai landrace cannabis, sourced from the Golden Triangle region, specifically Chiang Mai province in the mountainous north of the country. The stabilising influence of the highly homogenous Thai genetics contributes uniformity to this hybrid, adding refined sweet and creamy, perfumed, floral and musky aromas as well as increasing resistance to fungal pathogens such as botrytis.
Cultivating Thai A5 Haze
The result of this Haze/Thai cross is a slender, flexible and well-branched plant with narrow leaves and medium to large internode distance. Its vigour and branching make Thai A5 Haze a perfect candidate for SCROG cultivation or for the application of pruning and training techniques to increase production. For the best results, use low to medium levels of fertiliser throughout the plants' lifecycle.
When cultivated indoors, ACE Seeds recommends a flowering photoperiod of 11 hours light with 13 hours darkness, switching the plants to flower just 15 days after germination, so they don't get too big for the grow space.
Its high resistance to botrytis means that Thai A5 Haze can be grown outdoors and is suitable for subtropical and tropical climates but also does well in warm, coastal climates such as the Mediterranean or at latitudes up to 43ºN in areas with a mild autumn. The flowering phase lasts 12-14 weeks, phenotype dependent, with outdoor plants being ready to harvest in November.
Thai A5 Haze terpenes and effects
The terpene profile of Thai A5 Haze depends on the phenotype being cultivated, with some examples leaning towards the A5 Haze side with its darker aromas of leather, incense, liver and hash. The plants with heavier Thai influence will have much more refined and fruity aromas, a floral and musky cocktail of peaches, cream and candy.
The principal monoterpene of this hybrid is beta-myrcene followed by, depending on the phenotype, terpinolene, trans ocimene, alpha pinene, limonine and linalool. The sesquiterpenes found in Thai A5 Haze are beta caryophyllene and alpha humulene.
Lab analysis has found THC levels from 13.5% to 19.45%, with around 0.9% CBG and 0.04% or less CBD. The effects are long-lasting and very clean, cerebral, energetic and uplifting, offering a much more positive, creative and enjoyable high than the original A5 Haze.
