Expanded Perlite is mined volcanic mineral glass subjected to a process of heating at temperatures of up to 1200°c which causes it to expand to 7-16 times it's original volume.
Hugely popular and widely used in soil and soilless mixes, it is an inert, stable, pH neutral (6.5-7), sterile, and a lightweight insulator.
It's agronomic qualities are:
- Vastly improves aeration and drainage
- Balances water retention in the soil
- Insulates roots against temperature variations
- Stimulates the initial rooting and encourages vigorous plant growth
- Reduces weight in pots and containers, making them easier to manage
In hydroponic systems, Perlite can be used alone or mixed with other substrates for recirculation without nutrient loss.
Application:
For a soil without perlite, mix well in proportions of 10-20% for perfect aeration.
Great for use as an anti-pest soil-cover, just apply a thin layer over the surface (0.5 to 1 cm) to prevent fungus gnats and green algae while at the same time retaining moisture for longer.
