Golden Harvest tobacco, cultivation
Tobacco cultivation at home is simple, like growing tomatoes. Like the rest of the tobacco varieties, this variety has very small seeds that are usually germinated either in a seedbed or in a pot few millimetres deep. They are kept in the seedbed sheltered from the cold until the risk of frost has passed.
It is transplanted to the vegetable garden when the seedling has more than two leaves, leaving about 60cm between plants. It is better to do the transplant on a cloudy day, so seedlings suffer less stress and survival increases.
Golden Harvest tobacco plants are high nutrient consumers, like all tobacco varieties. It likes a soil rich in nitrogen and potassium, well-drained. It requires medium to high watering.
The plant can reach up to 2m. The light green leaves are oval, about 45cm x 75cm.
The harvest usually takes about 100-130 days. However, this time can be longer or shorter depending on specific growing conditions and desired maturity. The curing and processing of tobacco leaves can also take additional time after harvest.
