Lime Green tomato origins

Lime Green tomato, also known as Green Elf and Lime Green Salad was developed by Tom Wagner and introduced by Tim Peters in the 1980s. This variety gained popularity due to its medium-sized fruits, weighing between 100-150g. It offers a deliciously spicy flavour. When ripe, the tomatoes take on a distinctive greenish-yellow hue that adds a touch of colour to salads and other culinary preparations.

This variety is particularly appreciated for its ability to be grown in pots, which makes it ideal for small gardens and balconies. It can be used in many ways in cooking, including salads, sauces or simply eaten raw to fully appreciate its unique flavour.

Lime Green mid-season tomatoes cultivation

Lime green tomatoes are easy to grow following some basic requirements.

The seeds should be sown in pots at a temperature between 16-20°C. Seedlings should be grown under a well-lit shelter about five weeks before planting outdoors. When transplanting, it is essential to transplant the entire root ball into the ground after the last frost, spacing the plants at least 50cm apart and burying the stem up to the first leaves to encourage good rooting. It is also essential to water abundantly when planting.

For cultivation and care, tomatoes require a lot of light and heat, so growing them in full sun is crucial. In cold climates, they are best cultivated under cover to ensure better production. Regular watering is recommended, adapted to the type of soil and climatic conditions. The growing period extends from February to April for indoor seedlings. Harvest is ready from June to October, thus offering a long production period. Lime green tomato thrives in all types of soil, provided it is well drained, nutrient-rich and warm.
