The tomato is the fruit of the Solanum lycopersicum, a herbaceous plant of the Solanaceae family that has its origin in the area of ??Central America and Mexico, more specifically in the Andean region between southern Colombia and northern Chile. Hernán Cortés is supposed to have been the first to bring tomatoes to Europe in the 16th century. Once its culinary virtues were discovered, it was soon spread by the Spanish through all their colonies, reaching the Philippines and from there spreading to all of Asia.

Normally, tomato seeds are sown throughout the spring, with the harvest beginning about 10-12 weeks later, and is staggered throughout the summer as the fruits mature.
