Kokopelli presents the Nice Oxheart Tomato, or 'Cœur de Bœuf', an heirloom variety originating from Nice, France. It is prized for its red, slightly elongated, pear-shaped fruits, weighing between 200-300g. With its dense and flavourful pulp, low in seeds, it is ideal for raw consumption. It is now available in our seeds catalogue at Alchimia.

Nice Oxheart tomato seeds are sown from late February to April, under a light cover, at a temperature of 16-20°C. The seeds are planted 5–7mm deep in seed compost and watered moderately. After the emergence of 2-4 true leaves, an initial transplant into pots is carried out, burying the stem up to the cotyledons to encourage root development. Before planting in the ground, the plants must be acclimatised to outdoor conditions. Once the risk of frost has passed, the plants are transplanted into the soil, in full sun, with a spacing of 50cm between plants, burying the stem up to the first leaves.

Nice Oxheart Tomato – Large, Fleshy Tomatoes

The Nice Oxheart tomato exhibits indeterminate growth, meaning the stem continues to elongate and produces numerous side branches. Pruning is not recommended to avoid injuries and potential disease. Supporting the plants with cages or trellises is advised. Watering should be regular but not excessive, avoiding wetting the leaves and flowers to minimise the risk of fungal diseases. Mulching and organic preventative treatments, such as nettle manure, can also be beneficial.

Harvesting runs from June to October, providing an abundance of fruit throughout the season. The dense, slightly sweet flesh of the Nice Oxheart tomato is perfect for raw consumption, especially with a drizzle of olive oil, but it is also versatile for various cooking recipes.
