Cherokee Purple Tomato, an ancient tomato variety
The Cherokee Purple Tomato is a very old variety originating from the Cherokee tribe in North America, dating back to 1890. It was cultivated in Tennessee and introduced by Craig LeHoullier in North Carolina in 1991, using seeds from J.D. in Tennessee Green.
Purple and Pink Tomato
Cherokee Purple is an indeterminate variety that adapts well to a wide range of climates, especially dry ones, and can be grown either in the open or under glass
The fruit is juicy and displays shades of brown, pink, and purple, weighing between 250 and 400g. This ancient variety is sensitive to water stress; after a period of drought, excessive irrigation can cause the fruit to crack.
It is recommended to sow the seeds from February onwards once the risk of frost has passed. Transplant the seedlings when they have developed two pairs of true leaves, ensuring a spacing of 50cm between plants. Cherokee Purple prefers well-drained soils enriched with organic matter.
