Alchimia is happy to present Purple Perfume Tobacco by Kokopelli Association. This variety is usually cultivated at the edge of or at the fringe of vegetable gardens to attract pollinating insects, as the powerful fragrance of its purple flowers attracts large numbers of them, especially crepuscular and nocturnal insects.
Purple Perfume Tobacco cultivation
Tobacco seeds are very small and are usually germinated in seedbeds or pots a few millimetres deep, well protected from the cold as it is very sensitive to frost. They usually start to germinate after 10 days but may take longer if the temperature is low.
The transplant is done approximately in 4 weeks, when the seedlings are about 3-4 cm high. The seedlings should be separated by about 30cm between them, although being an ornamental tobacco variety it may be less since we are not looking for maximum leaf production.
Tobacco plants prefer well-drained soils (to prevent root rot) and sunny, in an environment with some humidity. It consumes a large amount of nutrients, so it is beneficial to have a well-fertilised soil.
Purple Perfume is not the most suitable tobacco variety to consume. Other varieties such as Hopi or Xanthi are more appropriate. This tobacco strain is interesting because of the flowering period, which is from late summer to early autumn.
