Kaleidoscopic Jewel tomato is a variety created by Brad Gates of Wild Boar Farms in Napa, California and produced by Kokopelli (France). It is highly valued by tomato breeders because it is genetically unstable. It becomes very attractive for seekers of new varieties due to its large number of mutations.
Its name perfectly describes a spectacle of colours that this plant can offer along the maturation period. It produces clusters of 5-7 round tomatoes, green in colour streaked with indigo by the sun under the anthocyanins action. Once mature, it acquires purple metallic colours with red and blue hues. The fruits weigh about 60-90g.
Its fruits have abundant seeds and an intense, aromatic, sweet and very juicy flavour, which makes them very suitable for eating in salads. It is a medium size plant.
Kaleidoscopic Jewel Tomato cultivation
It is an easy variety to grow, which adapts well to heat and cold and is quite resistant to pests. It is usually germinated in a seedbed after the last frost, then transplanted in well-drained soil and sunny place, separating the seedlings a minimum of 50cm.
The harvest starts after about 75 days after transplanting and continues to produce throughout the season. It is ready to collect when the indigo-coloured parts acquire a purple-brown colour, this will indicate the optimal time to harvest it.
