Alchimia Grow Shop presents Rocalba Roman Camomile Seeds, a medicinal plant ideal for infusions. It is a grateful plant easy to cultivate, offering good results sown both in open ground and in pots on the balcony.

Rocalba Roman Camomile, very simple to grow and grateful

Roman Camomile (Anthemis nobilis) is a herbaceous perennial plant belonging to the asteraceae family. It is native to Western Europe and Northern Asia and was formerly abundant in Greece where it was used as an ornament.

This plant reaches up to 50cm, developing several strong upright stems. The leaves are alternate with linear leaflets similar to pine leaves. In summer it produces radial flowers of about 20mm with white petals and a yellow heart, distributed at the top of the stems.

In spring the seeds are germinated, scattering them in a seedbed or directly in open ground. The substrate to use is a mixture of black peat, pearlite and worm humus or compost. This provides a rich mixture that retains moisture well but not in excess.

After sowing, the substrate is watered and set in a bright and warm place between 15º-25ºC. It should be irrigated sparingly but frequently, ensuring stimulation and facilitating the seeds germination in the shortest possible time with no risk of fungal infection.

In about 2-3 weeks from sowing, the first seedlings emerge. Once they have developed two pairs of real leaves and about 10cm in size, i.e. in about 40 days from sowing, they are ready to transplant into a larger pot or garden. They should be placed in the sun or in sun and shade. A distance of 50cm should be left between plants, and 50cm between rows or furrows. It is a resistant plant, but in case of thrips or aphids, these pests can be treated with organic phytosanitary products.

The flowers and stems, fresh or dried, are used in infusion. The flowers are harvested in summer as they bloom. If the entire plant is used, it is harvested when most of the flowers are in bloom. The plant is cut at ground level, about 3 months after germination. It offers digestive, carminative, calming and antispasmodic benefits, among others.
