Batlle organic camomile, grows well in warm climates and rich soils
Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. It is native to Europe and the temperate regions of Asia, but is also present nowadays in some areas of Australia and America.
This plant can reach up to 25cm and develops numerous firm upright stems with alternating leaves of small leaflets. Its leaves resemble those of pine trees. In summer it blooms flowers with white petals and a yellow button.
The ideal time to germinate the seeds is in spring, in a seedbed or by scattering them directly in open ground in the garden. Afterwards they are lightly covered with a loose-textured soil enriched with worm humus, compost or manure.
Batlle organic camomile, perfect for infusions, with a digestive and soothing effect
Seedlings sprout provided the substrate is kept moist but not waterlogged. This ensures good root oxygenation, as well as a location with indirect light and a temperature of between 15-25ºC helps its development.
After about 2-3 weeks the first seedlings emerge, and in about 40 days with two pairs of true leaves and about 10cm they are ready for transplanting. They can be placed in a larger pot or in open ground in the garden. The young plants should be placed in a sunny spot with a distance of 20 cm between plants and 30 cm between rows. The use of organic phytosanitary products can prevent thrips and aphids.
The flowers can be harvested as they appear, 2-3 months after germination, although stems and leaves can also be used. It is consumed as an infusion, benefiting from its soothing, digestive, anti-rheumatic and anti-neuralgic properties, among others.
