Cumin (Cuminum cyminum) is an herbaceous plant which belongs to the Apiaceae family (formerly called Umbellifer). It is native to the Mediterranean regions but has now spread to the American continent.
It is a plant with an annual cycle reaching up to 90cm, it develops fine and long leaves, with pink or white flowers huddled in umbels at the top. The flowers are responsible for producing the cumin seeds at the end of the flowering period after they have been pollinated.
It is germinated in late winter-early spring in an indoor seedbed, or in mid-spring in direct sowing after the frost season. They are sown in a planting frame of about 45cm x 10cm. 2-3 seeds are placed 1cm deep, covered with soil rich in peat and worm humus.

This plant does not require much watering or many nutrients, appreciating a high humidity level, organic matter and peat in young plants in order to develop properly. Cultivated in full sunlight during growth, they become more tolerant to cold and shortages.
Although it doesn't require too much water, an automatic irrigation system during the first development stages is very useful. It is important to prevent the plants from drying out but also from excessive humidity, by programming the watering properly.
At late summer-early autumn, the flowers are filled with cumin seeds. They are collected when the plants have dried and turned brown. The seeds are then left to dry for a few days in a ventilated place. They are then ready to be used in cooking or for medicinal purposes.
