Rocalba Lemon Basil, stimulates peppers, tomatoes and courgette harvest
Lemon Basil (Ocimum basilicum) is an annual herbaceous plant that belongs to the Labiadas family. It is native to India and is notable for reaching a height of 30-50cm, for its lobed leaves with an intense green colour and a refreshing aroma.
It can be germinated in a seedbed in late winter or early spring, and also by direct sowing ensuring the frost season is over. We should use a planting frame of about 25cm x 25cm. In case one also grows tomato, cucumber, pepper, aubergine or courgette plants, basil can be planted between them, thus enhancing their quality and quantity, and at the same time helping to protect against whitefly, aphids, mosquitoes, oidium and mildew.
Simply scatter a few seeds and cover them with 0.3mm of soil and a worm humus mixture. A good amount of direct sunlight and a temperature of at least 15°C should be provided. After about 10-15 days the sprouts will emerge. After 30 days the plants can be separated in individual pots, by mid spring when the plants reach about 25cm, they can be transplanted into the vegetable garden or the final pot.
Lemon Basil seeds, refreshing citric aroma
This plant is vulnerable to cold and frost, needing a warm and quite sunny climate, with temperatures around 20-30ºC. In regions with very hot summers, it is advisable to place them in a semi-shaded place to prevent them from drying out.
They require continuous but moderate water, with a substrate providing good drainage to prevent the roots waterlogging. Installing a drip or automatic irrigation system facilitate the task a lot, especially in summer.
It is ready to harvest during summer and autumn. The leaves and stems are cut with well sharpened scissors, allowing the plant time to recover so as not to exhaust it, thus maintaining its vitality and vigour. This will let us enjoy its delicious lemon aroma in our dishes for a long time.
