Rocalba organic Genovese basil, super aromatic strain
Basil (Ocimum basiliscum) is an annual plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family. It is very famous in Italian cuisine although it is native to Africa and Southeast Asia. It is a plant with rounded, fleshy and very aromatic leaves. The aroma is very characteristic, between smoky and herbal with clove touches.
It is ideal to be sown at the end of winter or beginning of spring (February-April). The seeds are scattered in a small pot or seedbed, covering them with 2-3mm of soil rich in peat, worm humus and compost or dried manure.
For best results, water abundantly and provide a sunny spot at a temperature above 15°C (it does not resist low temperatures well). The first shoots emerge after 15 days, reaching about 10cm in 30 days. Then it can be transplanted into a large pot, or in about 40-45 days and 20-25cm in open soil or the final pot.
Genovese basil, productive and easy to cultivate
When planted in open ground, it should ensure a good balance between drainage and water retention. It requires between 25-40cm room for good development so it can acquire the knob-like, voluminous and compact size that characterises this aromatic plant variety.
It should be provided with abundant watering (especially in summer when it can dehydrate more easily). A continuous irrigation but without waterlogging the soil which could rot the roots. It is advisable to install a drip or automatic irrigation system to make this task easier.
The leaves are ready to harvest after 40 days from the first transplant. It should be used scissors with a good edge, cutting the stem ends at 10-20cm from the tips and above the bud so that it can continue to vegetate.
