Large Green Basil (Ocimum basilicum) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Laminaceae family, with fleshy, lobed leaves and a very pleasant aroma. It is native to Iran, Pakistan, India and other tropical Asian regions.

The seeds can be germinated in a seedbed (best option), but also in direct sowing in the vegetable garden (some risk of failure). The seeds should be sown in a planting frame of about 25cm x 25cm, or between tomato, cucumber, pepper, aubergine, and courgette plants. This stimulates the production of these varieties and helps in the prevention of whitefly, aphids, mosquitoes, oidium and mildew.

A few seeds are scattered in a small pot with soil and worm humus. Then covered with 0.3mm of non-compacted soil. They are placed in a place with abundant sunlight and a temperature of at least 15ºC. The first sprouts emerge after about 10-15 days, and can be separated and transplanted into individual pots after about 30 days, then replanted in the final pot or in the garden in mid-spring.

It is an annual plant that can be affected by cold and frost, requiring a warm and sunny climate with temperatures between 20-30ºC. In regions with very hot summers it can be placed in the sun and shade to prevent it from becoming dehydrated.

It requires constant water but in a moderate way, and a substrate with good drainage that is not waterlogged but does not dry out either. A drip or automatic irrigation system ensures that the water requirements are perfectly controlled.

The leaves can be harvested during summer, cutting them with scissors and letting the plant recover so it doesn't get exhausted and keeps its vitality and vigour. In this way we can enjoy its delicious and exotic aroma throughout the season.
