Carentan Leek is an easy to grow and undemanding plant. It reaches a large size, with wide, bluish-green leaves and thick, white stems. It offers a high yield, superior in quality to other leek varieties. Leeks do not need much room and can be harvested over long periods of time.
Organic Thick Carentan Leek, spring and autumn sowing
Leeks withstand low temperatures and adapt to almost all climates, preferring mild and humid conditions. It also likes shady areas where it grows better than in locations with high temperatures and solar exposure. It favours maintaining some humidity in the substrate, so a mulching layer works very well. It benefits from well-worked, loose substrates with good drainage. It does not do well in easily compacted substrates. If compost or manure is used, it should be well composted and never fresh.
Sowing should be done in spring and autumn, at a depth of 1-2cm, keeping the substrate moist. When the plant reaches about 15-20cm, it should be transplanted to the definitive site in a 20x20cm planting frame. Leeks combine well with carrots, tomatoes or strawberries cultivation. The harvest is ready in about 210 days.
