Batlle organic Peppermint, easy to cultivate and very aromatic

Peppermint (Mentha piperita) is a hybrid plant between watermint and spearmint. It is native to the temperate regions of Europe. It has been cultivated in a controlled way since the 17th century in England due to its great aromatic properties.

It is a perennial plant that loses its leaves in winter but resprouts again in spring. It develops abundant ramification with 40-50cm stems that grow from an underground rhizome. It produces a multitude of broad, slightly hairy oval leaves up to 9cm long. In summer it produces clusters of small purple flowers.

The seeds are germinated in spring in a frost-protected seedbed. It is ready for transplanting in summer in the garden or a pot, when it is sunnier and warmer. Few seeds are scattered in a mixture of soil and worm humus, mixing lightly to cover them with a thin substrate layer.

Batlle organic peppermint, benefits from moist and nutrient-rich soil

The seeds are then watered ensuring that the soil is kept moist but not waterlogged, at a temperature of 20-25ºC and in indirect light or gentle sunlight. In about 10-15 days the first shoots emerge. When the temperature is much lower or higher than optimum, germination is delayed considerably, so it is important to be patient.

After germination, the young plants adapt well to temperate climates and can even withstand temperatures below freezing in winter. It is a plant that is not very demanding with the substrate, although it develops better in soils rich in organic matter, calcareous and humid. It is very useful to use an automatic irrigation system to enhance its development, especially in summer.

Provided good conditions, it spreads quickly occupying all available space as it develops by stolons. This means that the leaves can be harvested throughout the season with no problem of exhausting the plant and therefore enjoying its aroma in our recipes or infusions.
