Toad Skin Melon, widely cultivated in Spain due to its great sweetness and juiciness
Melons originated in the tropics, but it is not certain whether they originate from Africa or Asia. There are many varieties, shapes, sizes and colours. Melons are related to cucumbers, pumpkins and courgettes. Toad Skin Melon is a variety widely cultivated, well adapted and popular in Spain. Piel de Sapo Melon is a crawling plant with yellow leaves and soft stems. It is one of the most popular varieties because of its sweetness and juiciness.
Toad Skin Melon, fruits in 90 days over 3kg
Toad Skin Melon have a thick skin, which ensures that the fruits remain in good condition for a longer period after harvesting. Melons are collected between June and October, according to the sowing time. It usually takes about 90 days from germination to produce fruits weighing up to 4kg. It is highly resistant to powdery mildew and aphids.
Sowing season is in spring, it is sensitive to frost so it is advisable to transplant to ground when the soil temperature is 22°C, and therefore germination in seedbeds sheltered from the cold is recommended. It needs a well-drained, slightly acid substrate rich in organic matter.
For a proper development, it requires high temperatures and a minimum of 5-6 hours of direct sunlight. It is sensitive to water stress and watering should be frequent but not abundant, since it is not fond of waterlogging which can cause root problems and fruit rot. It is recommended to water carefully or to install a drip irrigation system to prevent the fruits and leaves from getting wet. It can be cultivated in pots or in the ground. It is a good option to grow it around the cultivation perimeter as it is a crawling plant and can occupy more than 4m2. In addition to be a very pleasant crop, it can be used as a decorative element in our terraces or gardens.
Toad Skin Melon requires insects in order to produce fruit. Its flowers need to be pollinated for fruit set, pollination can be done manually but it is always preferable entomophilous pollination by insects such as ants or bees.
Toad Skin Melon contains approximately 85% water and has a high content of beta-carotene (vitamin A), vitamins C and B9. Piel de Sapo melon is high in potassium (diuretic effect) and contains phosphorus to a lesser extent, calcium and magnesium.
