Rocalba pennyroyal mint, very strong and adaptable to all kinds of substrates
Pennyroyal mint (Mentha pulegium) is an herbaceous, perennial and lively plant belonging to the Labiadas family. It has been cultivated for centuries in the Mediterranean area and spontaneously grows in Western Asia.
This plant develops up to about 40cm, with upright thin rectangular stems and with abundant ramification. The leaves are lanceolate, slightly serrated and dark green in colour, disposed in an opposite way. The stems are crowned by pink globular inflorescences.
The ideal time to germinate the seeds is in spring. This is carried out in a seedbed by placing a few seeds in a mixture of soil and worm humus, or in a Jiffy type peat block. The seeds are covered with a 1mm soil layer, and watered to settle them. The seedbed is placed in a warm, lighted place and in about 4 weeks the seedlings will start to grow.
Rocalba pennyroyal mint, mentholated aroma with a digestive and soothing effect
This plant is very appreciative to a temperate climate and direct sunlight. It requires more water if the heat increases, bearing cold and frost well down to -20°C. It is a very adaptable plant which can be cultivated in many environments at different altitudes and in various climates. It offers good results with little effort, tending to occupy all the space it has available.
It prefers rich and fertile soils but adapts well to loamy, sandy, clayey or alkaline, neutral or acidic substrates. It requires frequent but moderate irrigation to prevent waterlogging of the roots but keeping the soil humid. A drip or automatic irrigation system can be useful if planted in open ground.
When the plant has developed a little, the stems and leaves can be harvested (without exhausting the plant). They are dried in a cool, dry place to be consumed as an infusion. It has a sedative, digestive and carminative effect and helps to regulate menstruation, as well as offering an intense, mentholated aroma.
