Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. It is native to warm areas of Africa, Europe and Asia and was already known by the ancient Egyptians and Greeks.
It is a plant habituated to the wild environment, with stems that sprout from the ramification and can reach more than 1m high (especially by applying fertiliser with worm humus or compost). It produces leaves with an intense green color covered by a beautiful silver that provides a really particular visual effect.
It can be germinated either in a seedbed or in direct sowing, between late winter and spring. The seeds are placed in a planting frame of about 40cm between plants and 80cm between rows. The seeds are buried a maximum of 0.5cm, with the sprouts emerging after about 10-15 days.

It is adaptable to any climate, tolerating well acidic soils although it offers best results in loose substrates, rich in organic matter and with good drainage. It requires frequent and moderate watering, preventing roots from becoming waterlogged. It can be very useful to use an automatic irrigation system.
Providing adequate conditions, this plant can live up to 3 decades, since it can stand the cold well (as long as it is not too extreme). Pruning the dry branches in autumn, the plant focuses the vitality and resources, reaching the following season in a perfect condition.
During summer and autumn it produces small yellow flowers distributed on all the branches, providing a really nice appearance. For therapeutic use, it is recommended to harvest it before the flowers start to appear, thus obtaining the maximum concentration of essential oils and absinthe, its main alkaloid.
