The auto-flowering trait, not dependent on photoperiod, is characteristic of Ruderalis cannabis. With this uniqueness, a lot of seedbanks have conducted breeding work with this wild cannabis subspecies and developed classic and current strains in auto-flowering format. The forerunner was Doctor's Choice seedbank with its Lowrider variety.
In the beginning, auto-flowering strains, also known as automatic cannabis, were not productive. They were small and not very powerful, but over time and research the new auto hybrids have convinced the public and have established themselves as a great alternative in cultivation due to their ease (fast cultivation cycle), aroma, and production, with even XXL-sized auto strains.
Automatic cannabis seeds characteristics
Auto-flowering or automatic strains do not depend on the photoperiod, in other words, they do not respond to the sunlight cycle. Flowering begins regardless of the hours of direct light received, starting three or four weeks after germination. The complete cycle of this type of genetics ranges from 55 days to 11-12 weeks.
Auto-flowering strains are a solution for cultivation in places with light pollution, where photodependent seeds, feminised and regular, never flower. Examples are a balcony or a terrace with a streetlamp or light source nearby that interrupts the night period. Auto-flowering varieties, in these cases, will ensure the harvest.
Auto-flowering seeds cultivation
Auto-flowering seeds can be cultivated at any time of the year, but to optimise yields it is recommended to sow between spring and late summer. A site with a minimum of 5-6 hours of direct sunlight is also recommended. It should be noted that the plant cycle, from seed to harvest, is about 55-85 days depending on the genetics. It is therefore possible to grow 3-4 cultivations per year in the same outdoor space, depending on the latitude. Many growers cultivate Autos in spring to enjoy their buds while waiting for the photodependent strains to be harvested in October.
In indoor cultivation it is recommended a photoperiod of 18/6h or 20/4h of light during the whole cycle. Once the seed has germinated, it should be transplanted to its definitive location without successive transplants. It is best to place it in a pot of at least 10L, with a good substrate or professional soil.
Alchimia offers fertilisers for auto-flowering plants, especially for these varieties with a short growing period.
