It's not often that a single cannabis variety is held up to represent the tastes of an entire nation, but that seems to be the case with Cheese and the UK, possibly because it's the only elite clone originating from those shores to have had a considerable impact on the international cannabis breeding scene. Selected in the late 1980s from a pack of Sensi Seeds Skunk #1, this clone-only cultivar got its name due to the incredibly pungent cheesy aroma of the flowers, and quickly gained popularity for this reason, although the high yields and potent effect also helped in that department!
In the mid-90s, a Cheese clone found its way into the hands of the Exodus Collective, a socially conscious movement famous for free rave parties but also deeply committed to social projects in the local community. They also campaigned for the legalisation of cannabis, openly consuming it and encouraging its cultivation at any opportunity. As a result, the collective gave out many clones of Cheese and before long, growers were talking about the "Exodus Cheese" (also sometimes known as the "Brightside Cheese") and this plant's reputation was cemented.
Indica-dominant but with a sativa touch to the structure, Cheese is relatively easy to grow and gives very good harvests of long, sticky colas that often develop "foxtails" and a faint purple tint at the end of flowering. It's not the fastest to flower indoors, needing up to 9 weeks to get the maximum expression from the buds, but the yields and resin production are compensation enough. The aroma really is incredibly intense, demanding the use of carbon filters and other odour-prevention accessories during cultivation without fail. In fact, it smells so strong that just walking around with some flowers sealed in a bag in your pocket can be risky, and forget about public transort!
While Big Buddha Seeds was the first seed bank to commercialise this clone in seed form with Big Buddha Cheese, its great characteristics have meant that Cheese has been used by many seed banks for their breeding projects, forming part of legendary hybrids such as Blue Cheese, Dairy Queen and Pineapple Chunk among many more.
