pH is the scale we use to measure acidity, employed by growers to show if a substrate or irrigation solution is very acid, very alkaline or neutral. The pH scale goes from 0 (most acid) to 14 (most alkaline) with 7 as the neutral point.
To explain it better, we could liken the pH to a valve that regulates the intake of nutrients available to the plant, meaning that, no matter how much fertiliser in the substrate, if the pH level is incorrect, the plant will not be able to absorb these nutrients.
When growing in soil or other substrates with organic fertilisers, pH control is not absolutely necessary as long as the substrate is within a range of 6 to 7. This pH range allows optimal absorption of nutrients, on the other hand, if the irrigation solution is very acidic or alkaline, then it will need to be corrected to optimal pH levels.
Each nutrient element requires a specific pH to be absorbed by the plant, and for this reason it is recommended to have slight variations in the pH level of each irrigation during the plants' development. This subtle fluctuation of the pH will make the full spectrum of nutrients available to the plants, making it easier to pull off a cannabis harvest without any problems.
In the case of mineral fertilisers, whether they are used in soil, hydro, coco or aeroponics, maintaining the correct pH is vital to avoid nutrient deficiencies and ensure the plants evolve favourably, rewarding the grower with the best possible production and highest quality to the grower.
