Alchimiaweb.com presents the Rocalba Amposta Red Onion organic seeds, a plant that produces large and colourful bulbs with shallow roots suitable for cultivation in orchards, pots and planters.
Amposta Red Onion organic seeds, purple and fleshy bulbs
This liliaceous family plant is notable for its balloon-shaped fruits. It produces onions of about 170g with reddish skin and a very compact inner with purple tones. It offers a slightly spicy aroma that remains in good condition for quite some time once harvested.
The seeds can be germinated between January and March. The seedlings are left to grow between February and April until they reach the size of a pencil, then they are transplanted into the final pot or in our orchard open ground. They should be planted in a 40cm frame between lines and 10cm distance between plants.
We sow 2-3 seeds in a seedbed with medium textured soil rich in worm humus and nutrients. The soil is kept moist but not watered. The ideal temperature is between 13º-28ºC. The germination takes place after about 12-15 days.

Once transplanted, they develop a multitude of lance green leaves. Once the plant has completed is growth, the onions begin to develop.
During this period watering must be carefully controlled, avoiding water excess so that no root fungi appear. Abrupt fluctuations in watering should be avoided as can cause the onions to crack and break. It is advisable to install an automatic irrigation system.
The onions are just fattened at the end of the summer with the harvest ready between August and October up to our cultivation weather conditions.
