Royal Golden Watermelon characteristics
Royal Golden Watermelon was selected in the 1960s by the Willhite seed company (Poolville, Texas, US). It became available thanks to the Baker Creek Seeds company, which discontinued it in the 1970s.
Royal Golden watermelons are early fruits that weigh from 4-11kg and can measure up to 50cm. Once mature, it acquires a characteristic golden yellow colour, which gives it its name. The pulp is red and crispy, especially sweet, and tasty. This variety produces few seeds, which are not black but white.
Golden Royal Watermelon cultivation
The best place for its cultivation should be a sunny place , and if possible, with a sandy soil rich in humus or enriched with compost.
Its seeds are usually germinated in a seedbed or pot after the last frosts. Germination occurs after 5-10 days. They can be germinated directly in the ground when temperature does not drop below 15ºC. They should be planted 50-100cm apart and 150-200cm between rows.
Royal Golden watermelon is easy to cultivate. It requires a medium irrigation, with well-drained soil. The optimal cultivation temperature is between 23-28ºC. At temperatures below 11ºC, the plant stops growing. If the leaves turn yellow during cultivation, there is nothing to worry about, it is normal for this variety.
It is usually the first watermelon to be harvested. It is a very early variety, with the harvest ready after about 85 days after planting, depending on environmental conditions.
