Dewako One Bite Aubergine is a variety of Japanese origin (Dewako, Yamagata, Japan), It owes the name to the small size that makes it possible to eat it in one bite.
Its rather rounded fruit weighs about 10g, and 7-10cm. It has a purple-black colour with a purple calyx.
It is an excellent aubergine variety for pickling. In general, aubergines of Asian origin are spongy when raw and firm but creamy when cooked. Asian aubergines generally taste better than American varieties and are usually not pre-treated for bitterness.
Dewako One Bite aubergine, cultivation
Sowing is usually done in the seedbed 8 weeks before transplanting, preferably at about 24ºC. They are planted about 50cm apart when the seedling has 2-3 leaves. The soil must be well-drained, and enriched with a good balanced fertiliser, since too much nitrogen produces a lot of foliage but few fruits. Plant in a sunny location.
The harvest begins from July to October in the Northern Hemisphere.
