“Maravilla de Verano" lettuce (Lactuca Sativa) is an annual variety originating in Asia. It is remarkable for developing a compact and rounded head formed by slightly curly leaves of an intense green colour with purple or reddish touches.
The leaves are thick and crunchy, tasty, sweet, rich in vitamin C, pro-vitamin A, folic acid, potassium, phosphorus, iron, amino acids and lots of fibre. It is certainly a nutritious and delicious plant that brings a colourful touch to our dishes and salads.
The ideal germination period is between late winter (protected from frost) and early summer. It is advisable to cultivate some every 20 days so as to be able to harvest during the whole season. The seeds tape is placed in a mixture of soil and worm humus or compost. The seeds are sown flat or in a bed about 25cm from the ground to keep it away from the soil moisture. It is then watered to soak the paper well.

Then cover the tape with 1cm of soil but do not compact it too much and water it again. It must be ensured that the substrate is kept moist without waterlogging. The seeds will sprout after about 3-4 days. The substrate must be levelled and very well drained to avoid excess humidity, which could cause fungal attacks on our lettuces.
This variety suffers a lot from the cold, so that is ideal to cultivate during the warm season in order to obtain the maximum splendour as it resists quite well high temperatures with no flowering. It is advisable to install an automatic drip irrigation system so that it can easily provide constant humidity but avoid excesses, thus favouring a rapid development.
The lettuce heads are ready for harvest in 45 days, between mid-spring and early autumn depending on the sowing time. It is cut at the base with a knife, removing the outer leaves once the head is well closed, compact and dense to the touch.
