Italian Sweet Pepper (Capsicum annuum) belongs to the Solanaceae family. A plant that grows over one metre high and benefits from the use of tutors to keep it upright. It has a vigorous development, being quite productive offering peppers during the summer and autumn until the low temperatures arrive.

The ideal time to germinate it is in winter or early spring, in a heated seedbed with a temperature of about 25ºC and direct light. 4-5 seeds are placed in each pot, providing substrate enriched with worm humus, and keeping it moist but not waterlogged.

After 8-10 days the first sprouts emerge. When the plants grow about 15 cm, after approximately 30-45 days they can be transplanted into the final pot or our vegetable garden open ground. Some humus can be placed in the hole, cutting the cotyledons and burying the plant above them will make it develop much stronger.

It is a plant that requires a good amount of organic matter rich in nutrients, a loose and aerated substrate for good drainage and a lot of sunlight. It needs frequent and moderate watering, being advisable to use an automatic irrigation system to facilitate the task.

One can use a 50cm planting frame between rows and 40-50cm between plants. This ensures that they do not compete with each other and have optimum aeration preventing fungal problems. This variety mixes well with onions, so can be planted together to take advantage of space and enhance their growth.

70-85 days after sowing, the peppers are ready to harvest, when they are green and glossy with a fleshy appearance. Mature peppers can be collected progressively, stimulating the production of new flowers, which will provide continuous staggered harvest until autumn.
