The 4 Season Butterhead Lettuce (Lactuca Sativa Capitata) is a variety belonging to the daisy family. It can be cultivated all year round without any problem, so one can sow new seeds every 3-4 weeks to ensure lettuce for the whole season.
This plant develops a voluminous central head with dark large and fleshy leaves ideal for adding colour to salads. It has an aromatic and intense flavour and a smooth and silky texture that is a delight to the palate.
Seeds can be germinated all year round in a seedbed sheltered from frost, with good sunlight and a temperature of 12-15ºC. Place 3-4 seeds per cell about 3-5 mm deep, using a mixture of soil and worm humus. The substrate is kept moist, germinating after about 5-6 days.

Once the lettuce has developed 4-5 real leaves, the seedling is ready to transplant to the final pot (3-4L should be sufficient) or to the vegetable patch, respecting a planting frame of 40cm x 30cm. In this way the lettuces can grow optimally without competing for resources.
The growing substrate should be rich and loose-textured, thus balancing oxygenation and moisture retention. The use of an automatic irrigation system ensures a moist substrate without waterlogging. Padding the substrate also prevents weeds from developing.
Lettuces are ready to harvest after about 60 days. They are cut from the base whole with a knife, or progressively collecting the outer leaves as they are consumed. This allows time for the plant to regenerate, so that it can be enjoyed for much longer.
