Cannabis pancakes

Pancakes are one of the most popular breakfasts (and snacks) for millions of people around the world... and it's hard to resist their sweet aroma, delicious taste and fluffy texture! They are also ideal because they can be combined with a wide range of ingredients, from fruit to jams or syrups of all kinds, not forgetting chocolate, cream or condensed milk, of course.

As if this were not enough, there are also pancake recipes with other savoury ingredients. Have you ever had pancakes with fried eggs and bacon for breakfast? We highly recommend it, it's definitely a powerful way to start the day and you'll have energy for whatever you set your mind to! As you can see, pancakes are a recipe that can be combined with a large number of ingredients, and, of course, you can also make tasty cannabis pancakes. Let's see how to make them.

Cannabis pancake recipe

Let's start with a list of everything we will need to make this recipe. As you can see, the first ingredient we are going to need is, precisely, cannabis milk. And how do you make cannabis milk? We'll tell you how below, but first, let's get everything ready that we'll need to start cooking:

Ingredients

  • 250ml cannabis milk
  • 500ml water
  • 125g plain white flour
  • 3 eggs
  • 5g yeast
  • A pinch of salt
  • A little butter

Utensils

  • Mixing bowl
  • Whisk (manual o electric)
  • Saucepan
  • Non-stick frying pan
  • Strainer
  • Silicone spatula

Preparing cannabis milk

Right then, for step one, we need 250ml of cannabis milk. To prepare it, we will take 1 or 2 grams of buds that we have previously ground up with a grinder. We can also use trim or resinous sugar leaves, although in that case, we will need to use more to achieve the same effect; about 8-10 grams will be enough. Of course, the potency of the milk you get will depend largely on the potency of the material used, as well as the quantity. As always, we recommend starting with light doses and, if needed, increasing them until the desired effects are achieved.

In the case of using flowers, we'll need to use quite a bit less than with leaves
If using flowers, we'll need quite a bit less than with leaves or trim

Once we've got the cannabis ready, we will heat it in water for a few minutes to "clean" the plant matter. Don't worry! Cannabinoids are water-repellent, which means that by boiling them in the water we will not get rid of them, which is what happens in the next step when we heat the cannabis with the milk. As they are fat-soluble, the cannabinoids will be released from the plant matter and will be infused with the fatty element of the equation, in this case, the milk. Incidentally, this process will work better with whole milk than skimmed milk, and vegans can always use their favourite plant-based milk, perhaps adding a little oil - a tablespoon - to improve dissolution. That said, let's clean the cannabis with water by following these simple steps:

  1. Fill a saucepan with 500ml water and add the cannabis
  2. Bring to a boil on a medium heat
  3. Immediately reduce the heat so it stops boiling
  4. Heat for 10 minutes
  5. Strain the liquid,  taking care to minimise handling of the buds or trim
  6. Rinse with cold water

Perfect, now the material is well-cleaned and ready to heat again, although in this case, we will heat it together with the milk. It will be as easy as repeating the previous steps, but substituting the water for milk and heating for 45 minutes instead of 10. Let's summarise it step by step to make it clearer:

  1. Place the cannabis and 250ml milk in a pan
  2. Bring to a boil on a medium heat
  3. Immediately reduce the heat so it stops boiling
  4. Heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally and making sure it doesn't start boiling again
  5. Strain the liquid and discard the vegetable material

We now have our cannabis-infused milk ready, so we can move on to the next stage. Of course, you can prepare more milk than needed and store the excess in the fridge, respecting the expiry date of the milk used and, above all, properly labelling the bottle holding our psychoactive milk and keeping it well out of the reach of children... we don't want any unpleasant surprises! As we can see in other recipes, having cannabis milk can be ideal for preparing, for example, a delicious cannabis béchamel sauce, or refreshing smoothies.

How to make a cannabis infusion

Infusions are a simple and effective way to consume cannabis for recreational or therapeutic use. The active ingredients of this plant are not soluble in water, so it is necessary to use a liquid containing fat, such as whole milk, to extract the cannabinoids more easily. In this article, we present a homemade recipe for making a cannabis infusion with whole milk.

Effects of cannabis milk

We already mentioned that the effect of our cannabis milk will depend on both the amount of material used and the potency of the material. However, this is an important point that deserves a little more attention.

In fact, thinking about it, in the end, the potency of our cannabis milk will depend on one thing only: the total amount of cannabinoids present in our starting material. However, as you might expect, if you use flowers from a high THC strain you will get milk with a high THC content, while if you go for a CBD-rich strain you will get CBD-rich milk. Logical, isn't it? By diluting the cannabinoids present in the sample, we will obtain milk with the effect of those cannabinoids; in short, the effect of our cannabis milk will be a reflection of the starting material used.

Making cannabis pancakes

The first thing to do is to put all the ingredients in a bowl and whisk them together until you get a homogeneous batter. It's that easy! So, we'll mix the cannabis milk (250ml), the flour (125g), the yeast (5g), the eggs (3) and the salt and beat well until there are no lumps. If you do it by hand, a whisk will probably be the best option for mixing. Once we have made the batter, which we can keep in the fridge until the next day without any problem, we heat the frying pan.

Once hot, brush the pan with a little butter and pour some batter into the pan, about a soup ladle-full. Tilt the pan a little so that the batter spreads out well and leave to cook for 1-2 minutes until you see holes forming on the surface and the edges start to look slightly toasted. Flip the pancake over and cook for another minute. Now we have our first cannabis pancake!

Variations on cannabis pancakes

As we have already seen at the beginning of this post, pancakes are enormously versatile in the kitchen; we can mix them with all kinds of fresh fruit, such as blueberries, blackcurrants, blackberries or strawberries (for some curious reason, they go great with berries), although we can also prepare them with banana or orange and dark chocolate, to give just a couple of examples. Even with a scoop of ice cream and a little cream, if you fancy something particularly rich and sweet.

They are also often combined with all kinds of compotes, jams or syrups... Who hasn't heard of the famous pancakes with maple syrup that are so popular in the United States and Canada? A classic, without a doubt, and when a recipe becomes a classic in the kitchen, there's a good reason!

If we want to prepare savoury pancakes, we have just as many options. Apart from the aforementioned pancakes with bacon and eggs - another classic, by the way - we can also prepare them with ham and cheese, with coleslaw and sour cream, and even with all kinds of meats... if you search a little you will see that there are endless options because after all, pancakes end up being used in the same way as French crêpes, Mexican burritos and tacos or the flatbreads used to make shawarmas.

As always, and to close this post, we remind you that ingesting cannabis is not the same as inhaling it, as its effect is more potent in the first case. Start with small doses, check the results, and gradually increase them until you find the one that suits your needs. Remember also that the effects can vary considerably from one plant to another (be cautious when using a new variety or plant), and that any preparation you make with cannabis should be labelled in a clearly visible way, and stored only within the reach of adults.

Enjoy your pancakes!
