Information on Black Lobster
Black Lobster is a feminized variety from Cipher Genetics, the American seed bank founded by Chris Lynch after his time as a breeder at Compound Genetics. It's a balanced hybrid with an aroma of blueberry, ripe grape, and gas, and a THC content around 25–27%. Its effect starts euphoric and social and evolves toward a calm and conversational state.
A blue lobster at the origin
The story of Black Lobster begins with Facade, a cross of Apples & Bananas x Eye Candy that Chris Lynch released during his time at Compound Genetics. The Maine Trees team bought several packs of those seeds and found a plant very different from the rest of the phenotypes in the hunt. They called it Blue Lobster, like the blue lobster, a rare crustacean from the East Coast of the United States.
Blue Lobster won three awards at the 2023 Zalympix East Coast. When it reached California, the first batch of three pounds grown by Umma Sonoma sold out in a single day at a Los Angeles dispensary. Chris Lynch summed up its profile as Pixy Stix with candy gas.
Lynch founded Cipher Genetics in 2023 and built an entire family of crosses around that clone. To obtain feminized seeds, the bank reversed Blue Lobster and used its pollen on the females that best matched it. Black Lobster is part of the second volume of this series, the Blue Lobster Vol. 2 collection, and is considered the darkest colored of the entire family.
Black Lobster genetics: Facade VIP x Blue Lobster
Black Lobster comes from the cross between Facade VIP and Blue Lobster. Both parents come from the same Facade line, so this variety concentrates the traits of that family rather than diluting them with external genetics. It's classified as a hybrid, and some catalogs place it at a 50/50 split between indica and sativa.
The plants are vigorous and upright, with strong lateral branching and a solid frame. In flowering they form long, frosty colas of dense, compact, and sticky buds. The purple coloration intensifies to almost black tones, which are what give the variety its name.
Facade VIP
Facade is the cross of Apples & Bananas x Eye Candy that Chris Lynch created at Compound Genetics. It's the same population from which Blue Lobster emerged, and the VIP version is a specific cut selected within it. In Black Lobster, this parent contributes structure and a tight bud finish.
Blue Lobster
Blue Lobster is a clone that Maine Trees selected from Facade seeds. It stands out for its deep purple leaves, large and shiny buds, and a coating of trichomes that leaves the flower almost white. As a parent it transmits dense calyxes, color potential, and abundant resin. Its growers have observed that under LED it takes on a more conical shape than under HPS lamps.
Growing Black Lobster
Indoors, Black Lobster completes flowering in 56–65 days, which equals about 8–9 weeks. Its production potential is medium-high to high, as long as canopy distribution is well managed. It performs better in a controlled indoor environment, where temperature, humidity, and lighting can be adjusted.
Due to its tall stature and vigorous branching, it responds well to topping and training techniques. With a stable environment, stretch is regular and flowering has predictable behavior. The resistant frame allows it to support heavy and resinous flowers throughout the cycle without major complications.
Its difficulty is medium. It's not a fussy plant, but it appreciates a grower who masters pruning and environmental control. Outdoors, it's only recommended for controlled grows, such as greenhouses, where the climate can be monitored during flowering.
Resin production is one of its strong points. That's why it works for both dried flower and extractions. The plants maintain a uniform structure, and the aroma is well preserved after careful curing.
Flavor and effect
Black Lobster's terpene profile is led by myrcene, caryophyllene, and limonene. Upon opening the jar, notes of blueberry jam and ripe grape appear with a citrus touch, all over a base of spicy diesel. Behind it emerges a savory, earthy, and funky background, with a sweet point that softens the whole.
On the palate, the variety offers a berry flavor, sweet and slightly spicy. The fruit recalls candy and finishes with a gassy ending that lingers on the palate. It's the combination of sweet fruit and gas that characterizes the Lobster family.
The effect starts with a euphoric and social rise, inviting conversation. Gradually it evolves toward a calm and relaxed state, in which body relaxation coexists with some mental clarity. It's a versatile variety for social moments, and may cause some dry mouth and eyes.
