Black Sugar Feminized by LIT Farms

Information on Black Sugar

Black Sugar is a feminized variety from LIT Farms, the American seed bank also known as Lost In Translation. It comes from the cross between Sugar Tab and Black Runtz, two modern hybrids that share a sweet aromatic profile, with notes of candy, fruit, and cream. It's a photoperiod plant that completes flowering in 8 to 10 weeks and can be grown both indoors and outdoors.

From its parents, you can expect a balanced-effect hybrid, somewhere between the mental stimulation of Sugar Tab and the more relaxing character of Black Runtz. It's a proposal designed for those seeking current American genetics with a sweet and pronounced flavor profile.

History of Black Sugar and LIT Farms

LIT Farms is the project of Ray Schiavone, the grower behind Tahoe Hydroponics. After sweeping the 2016 Jack Herer Cup in all main categories, he decided to create his own seed bank, based in Reno, Nevada. Since then, he has specialized in crosses with sweet and gassy profiles featuring abundant resin.

The name Lost In Translation refers to something many growers know well: there are terpene profiles so complex that it's impossible to explain them with words to someone who hasn't tried them.

The name Black Sugar follows the house logic and takes one word from each parent: Black from Black Runtz and Sugar from Sugar Tab. It's the same system the bank has used in other varieties from the Sugar Tab family, such as Hood Sugar or Rainbow Sugar.

Black Sugar Genetics

Black Sugar comes from the cross Sugar Tab x Black Runtz. The first parent is classified as a balanced hybrid between indica and sativa, while the second is usually described as a slightly indica-leaning hybrid. That's why you can expect a hybrid plant, with some variation between phenotypes depending on which parent is expressed more strongly.

LIT Farms classifies it as a medium-height plant, suitable for indoor and outdoor growing. From its parents, it can inherit a branched structure and dense buds, a characteristic trait of both Grandiflora genetics and the Runtz family.

Sugar Tab

Sugar Tab is a creation from Grandiflora Genetics, a breeder from Oakland, California, known for his sweet-profile varieties. It comes from the cross between LEDX8 and LCG Grandi Candi #8, a line that in turn descends from Lemon Cherry Gelato. For a while, it only circulated in clone form, and its breeder highlights an 8 to 10-week flowering period and generous production.

On the palate, it's described with a candy and sugar sweetness on the entry, a fruity background, and a clean finish reminiscent of a dessert. Its effect is defined as balanced, with a clear mental boost over a comfortable body base. LIT Farms has made it one of the pillars of their catalog, with crosses like Sugar Tab S1, Hood Sugar, Rainbow Sugar, Soul Glow, or Zilk.

Black Runtz

Black Runtz is known as the dark twin of Runtz, the famous cross of Zkittlez and Gelato. Its creation is attributed to Big Boss Farms, in British Columbia, Canada. It stands out for its very dark purple tones and a thick layer of trichomes.

Its aroma is described as creamy and citrusy, with a flavor of sweet berries and limonene as the dominant terpene. Its effect is usually defined as relaxing and cheerful. LIT Farms dedicated a complete release of crosses to it, including Black Sabbath, Dark Romance, Double Black OG, and Blacked Out.

Some users report that when grinding Black Runtz buds, the purple tones darken so much that the result looks almost black.

Growing Black Sugar

Black Sugar is a photoperiod variety, so flowering begins when the photoperiod shifts to 12 hours of light. Indoors, it completes flowering in about 8 to 10 weeks, a standard period for a modern hybrid. Being feminized seeds, all plants will be female, and there's no need to identify or remove males.

Its medium height makes it easy to manage in grow tents and cultivation rooms, and it also adapts to outdoor growing. Black Runtz tends to open up its branches quite a bit, so it's advisable to leave enough space between plants. It has also been described as sensitive to excess nutrients, so it's better not to overfeed.

Due to the Sugar Tab heritage, a genetics that its breeder describes as productive, Black Sugar starts from a good production base. Slightly cooler nighttime temperatures at the end of flowering can favor the appearance of the dark tones characteristic of Black Runtz in phenotypes that express them.

Flavor and Effect of Black Sugar

Both parents point in the same aromatic direction: sweet, fruity, and creamy. Sugar Tab contributes candy and fruit notes with a dessert-like finish, and Black Runtz adds citrus nuances and sweet berries over a creamy base. You can expect a candy-like profile in which limonene plays a prominent role.

As for the effect, the combination suggests a balanced hybrid. The mental clarity of Sugar Tab combines with the relaxed and cheerful character of Black Runtz, which can result in an initially cerebral experience that evolves toward a calm body sensation. As with any cross of two different parents, the final expression may vary from one phenotype to another.
