Trimming Cannabis. Tutorial video

In this Alchimia video tutorial Txus and Dani will show us in detail the necessary steps to trim cannabis plants.

We will learn how to properly manicure our cannabis plants once they’re matured in our home-grow, from the fattest flowers of the main stem to the smallest popcorn buds on the secondary branches of the plant.

Transcript of tutorial video "Trimming Cannabis" :

Today we’re going to learn how to trim our cannabis plants…

We’re in front of the grow tent. We’ve already chosen the plants we’re going to harvest and for this job we’ve enlisted the help of Dani Macro, both behind and in front of the camera, how about it Dani?

DANI- Hi guys, it’s my pleasure. I’ll do what I can!

Expert grower and Super-cameraman. We’ve selected the plants already, the grow tent is in darkness, right Dani?

DANI- Yes. We’ve been lowering the intensity of the Lumatek so that the plants finish maturing. You can see that we have some yellow leaves, meaning that they’ve lost most of the chlorophyll, and the plants are quite clean and ready to be cut. Now at the end we’ve left them in complete darkness for 2 days, so that the trichomes finish with the maximum concentration of cannabinoids.

And we’ve also been harvesting in sections, for example, we cut the top off this plant a few days ago as it was already mature...

DANI - Yes.

…and now we’re going to harvest the remaining plants, right?

DANI - That’s right. This plant was very tall and evidently tall plants will mature at a different rate at the top than on their lower branches, so we cut the canopy a few days back, and now we’re ready to harvest the lateral branches.

Perfect. Well let’s grab the plants and see how to harvest and trim them…

DANI - Excellent, let’s go!

We’re cutting the lower lateral branches, the smallest ones, with curved scissors, and we’re also going to remove the leaves that are already yellow from the stem. As you’ve seen, I used these curved scissors to manicure, I also have these that have a finer blade, and I’ve also used a tray for waste and also a couple of trays for the varieties, to hold branches and buds. To clean the tools, the scissors, I’ve got some isopropyl alcohol which I’ve put in a cup and I can clean as I work.

We’re working on the side branches, removing the leaves here on the stems. Careful with the buds as we cut these leaves with the scissors... and the leaves we can’t get by the stem, we’ll get them by trimming directly off the bud, right Dani?

DANI - Yes, cutting them, that’s right.

We’re cutting, in fact it’s called manicuring, no?

DANI - Yes. "Manicure" is the word. Correct.

In fact, it’s as if we were getting our nails done, right? Since manicure salons are so fashionable now...

DANI - This part can also be done very well once dry, with the precision scissors.

Exactly.

DANI -  It can be done when wet, but it works well when dry as well.

You can do one part and then do the rest later, if it’s too much work… now we’ve got the branch with the buds, we let it dry like that, right Dani?

DANI - Yes, we’ll leave it like that because the flowers are very small, they’ll dry quickly and be harsh to smoke, so if we leave them on the stem they’ll release the humidity more slowly.

Perfect, well now we’ve got…

DANI - Wow, what a cool tray!

…all the buds cut and ready for drying.

DANI - Well, we’re missing one thing.

What’s wrong?

DANI - Put a label on it, because we could forget the name of the variety and…

You’re right, I’ll take the one from the pot and clean it a bit.

DANI - Well then, time for the most enjoyable part. It’s the main bud!

There it is, let’s go.

So now what? What do we do with that, Dani?

DANI - Get in there!

Let’s get started with it, no? Very good, We’re going to cut between the 2 buds…

DANI - Let’s see… wait, wait, I want to see it, show me!

Between the first and the second. Can you see it there?

DANI - There it is! As low as possible, to have…

Shall I?

DANI - Go for it!

Okay, perfect. There it is. Now we take the bud and, like we did with the side branches, we’re cutting the leaves here, on the stem… snipping away. Let’s see if they cut well, because I don’t want to cut the bud, it’s really lovely. So, very carefully, okay. I cut here, turning it and giving it a little shake so the leaves fall…

We won’t get to all the leaves, as most will be covered by the bud. But anyway, we’re doing it and the bits we can’t get to, well, we’ll do as before: trimming the leaves away. Here we go… pim pam pim pam, if they stick, just shake a little and carry on, as you know, the resin is sticky.

Okay, how’s that? What do you think Dani? Fantastic, no?

DANI - Olé! What a cool lollipop!

The bud, like a lollipop, you want to lick it…

DANI - Very cool. While it’s true it’s very impressive to see a flower like that, but big buds tend to retain lots of moisture inside them, which can cause botrytis or other fungi, spoiling them. Personally, I prefer to separate them.

Really? You’d cut...

DANI - Yes, I’d definitely cut here to separate them. But it’s up to each individual grower.

I’m not going to do it. I love I like this! Hahaha

Let's finish off the job, we’ve only got these central buds that are usually quite dense and quite resinous too.

DANI - Yes. I really like this part of the plant, it's almost my favorite.

Yes. Some people prefer these to the main cola, you know.

DANI - Yes. Well I’m one of them.

…and once again. A bit more trimming and we’re done.

We’re now using the precision scissors to polish off the bud, removing the small leaves that are left, and now we’ve got a perfect "nugget" to present in a Cannabis Cup,for example. It’s beautiful, right?

DANI - Very beautiful, excellent!

What shall we do with this plant? Do we only cut the main bud? because the rest isn’t ready yet...

DANI - Yes. Same as the other.

Now to remove the leaves, pim pam pim pam and cut here. There, it’s yours!

We’re now in the dryer, in this case it’s a vertical, circular dryer. We already have 3 varieties drying and now we’re going to put these in the dryer. We just place them carefullyinto their shelf, separating them so they don’t touch each other and that’s it, with a little elegance, it’s not very complicated, just put it in, right Dani? There’s no mystery...

DANI - Yes. They should be separated, so they’re well aerated, okay?

Obviously we dry in the dark. Now we’ll turn off the lights and leave them 15 days in the dark.

In the dark, in a well-ventilated place...

DANI - Correct

…and with low relative humidity.

In an upcoming video we’re going to tell you in detail how to dry your weed properly, how to cure it and how to store it, like in the jars that you saw back there.

All these tips and many more, as always, at www.alchimiaweb.com, on our BLOG.

Thanks Dani. Till next time!

DANI - Same to you. Ciao! Till next time!

Ciao! I’ll carry on with this...

DANI - Txus, we’ll have to do another take, eh!

TXUS - No, not now. What you want is for me to trim all your plants for you.

DANI - He sussed us! Since you're here to film, at least you can help me with the whole harvest, right?

TXUS - What a bastard! yeah, yeah…

DANI - Hahaha

TXUS - Come on, another scene that didn’t come out right… hahaha
